As of today, who would you draft at number 8?

Recommended Posts

We need:

-Defense

-Pass Rusher

-Elite level talent

-High energy, high motor, work ethic

- FIts the keep pounding mindset

-A georgia bulldog because those guys have been difference makers in the league lately.

Give me Jalon Walker at 8 and lets figure out everything else from there.

Our defense needs playmakers

Two of our biggest needs are linebacker and EDGE

Josey Jewell is decent but he's 30 and will have no guaranteed money on his contract after this season and Trevin Wallace was thrown into the fire after Shaq Thompson injury and was not ready to be a starter.

Jadeveon Clowney and DJ Wonnum are actually a decent pair but both will be a free agent after 2025 season.

Jalon Walker is an off-ball linebacker who can rush off the edge, exactly the things the Panthers defense is in dire need of. This guy can be our new Frankie Luvu

Exactly

T-Mac or possibly Walker. Almost everyone else is a trade down, IMO, although you say that is off the table.

If you aren't mentioning Sanders being off the table, I would fail to see why a trade down isn't possible, however.

Trade back. There is no one at 8 that is much better than in the teens. So much meh. Getting a 2nd, early or mid, seems like the same quality of players with less hype so go double dip with 2 for thr price of 1 by trading back if possible.

My preference is to trade back and take Matthew Golden but if we stay at 8 I'm taking Jalon Walker.

There are some guys that you just know are gonna be good players based on their personality and the more I see of Jalon Walker talking about football the more confident I am in that belief. He'd be a perfect fit with the culture Dave and Dan are building here. His ceiling is Micah parsons, and his floor is a Frankie Luvu but on steroids with his elite athleticism.

I said before that our strategy should be 1. Mason Graham...if gone...2. trade back....if no good offer....3. Jalon Walker. Since your scenario removed 1 and 2, i would draft Walker. My biggest fear is not his tweener status or size but rather the ability of a good creative DC to get the most out of him.

1a. Mike Green, if he checks out with the back ground check.

1b. James Pearce jr also if back ground checks out.

Donovan Ezeiruaku if they can trade down.

Panthers have to come away with a 1st rnd talent edge rusher

If we are stuck at 8, I'd go with Warren or Walker.  Closest to best available that fits our needs.

In my mind, we need future starters at Edge, OT, S, and WR/TE from this draft.  So we need to find another second rounder.  Seattle and Chicago each have two.  I'm targeting Seattle with 50 and  52.

So my preference would be to move back to 18 and pick up 52 and 92.  At 18, the following would probably still be around - Emmanwori, Mykel Williams, Pearce, Starks, Grant, Barron, Eziuraku.  Lots to choose from.

52 and 57 are great spots to grab starter-level players at S, Edge, or WR/TE.  74 should be a good spot for our future RT.  92 can be used to move up a bit if necessary.

Use the rest of the draft for depth/backups - CB, LB, DT, TE, RB.

I am not getting the guys wanting warren.  Canales system doesnt utilize TE and Bryce doesnt throw consistently to tight ends, this is dating back to his bama days

And until we bring him in for a top 30 visit then its really not going to happen.

I doubt we can trade back from 8 so I would just go Walker for the defense assuming he is still there

If he's still there, run to the podium and take Tyler Warren. I've said it before and I'll say it again: this guy is going to be the next best TE to play the game. He would make an immediate impact on our success rate in every single game, every single offensive snap.

This is also a deep defensive draft and we can grab some good guys in the second and later rounds. There is also a second wave of free agency yet to come and a third when camp starts to shake itself out.

Grab Warren who will be a standout player for years to come, rather than risking it on a DE/Edge that looks and performs like a Brian Burns, potentially dynamic but ultimately just decent.

While I like Walker he scares me because of his tweeter size.  I know he screams baller on tape, but I’m not a fan of his size for the edge. My 1st option would be a trade back. If we traded back to 12 to 15 and picked up an early 2nd to go with pick 57 I would go with BPA.

In the 12 to 15 range I would not be afraid to go safety Malaki Starks, Nick Emmanwori  or  even TE Tyler Warren as our 1st round pick but in that range I really just want BPA

I may be in the minority, but if we could not trade back with decent value I want prototypical size at 8 for our Edge pick. Give me James Pierce Jr.

I'll take production over prototyping size, every time.

    • If he really wants to be here, that can happen.  It's totally up to him.  Yes, he'll have to take a hometown discount to do it.  He'll have to show that the last two seasons were outliers and he hasn't become an injury risk. It will come down to money and how much of it he wants.  If he wants to be paid at the upper end of the scale, it won't and can't happen here.  When healthy, he deserves that kind of pay and if he wants it someone else will pay it. It can totally happen.  And it's totally in his court.
    • He was on the "sideline" during OTA or mini camp, Im sure there was some Twitter/X post but news just moves so fast now.  He's not getting the press as TMac or even Horn, but he is making plays. That's the other deal, Im a big fan of his!  Just in order to get great value you need to give value in return. I said he would have been a 3rd rounder in 2025 draft, he just had bad luck with injuries hurting his stock and coming out in a deep WR class.
    • I've always said that PFF is a tool. If you don't know how to use it, or don't want to know how to use it, then it's useless. But some people actually do know how to use it---which is why it still exists and is used by all 32 NFL teams---and part of this is putting it all within context----seeing the bigger picture. If you don't understand that not all players, develop at the same rate, have different levels of talent, have injuries that affect their play, and face different circumstances in regards to the opposition and coaching, for example, then I don't know what to tell you. Coaches set expectations based upon a variety of things, not only last year's stat sheet, which may have been brought about by dynamics that you, as a fan, may or may not understand. And even if you have some understanding of them, as a fan, you still will never have the clarity that they do---the concerns or the context that they do. As a fan, you should even be putting your lack of understanding their context, into context (and stop trying to act like you know something to be true based upon a bad season at the end of the day).
