Truth is, he’s never lived up to the hype of his potential.  Closest he ver came was those first few years in Houston when they moved him around everywhere.  That being said, he’s a really, really solid player and a great vet to have on the roster.  Not sure why we make this move now?

He clearly got butt hurt over the draft and asked for release. Otherwise it doesn't make sense. You bring him to camp and wait for someone to lose a few guys to injury and make sure the rookies look reasonably ready. No one can tell me Clowney didn't cry and demand his release.

I don't think that's what happened. My take is he or his team reached out to Brandt/Dan and told them if they gave AT a raise for leading his group and dealing with BS, Clowney wants the same deal.

Dan/Brandt called around and found out no team would not even pay him 7,700,000 for a 2028 7th comp pick. He told clowney/team and they got feeling hurt. I bet they even asked him to take a pay cut. Clowney is now pissed, release me.....

Possible.  But to counter that, I feel vets, even well regarded ones, reach a point where no matter how solid they remain, no team is making a trade for them, and I think Clowney reached that point.

1 main reason i LOVE this move is because how many times did we see the Rivera or Fox era play older guys who honestly shouldn't have been on the field only to be put there for seniority. Holding a younger guy back from developing and stifling their progression!

This shows me DM is saying fug that! Lets get these young talented guys reps and ready to fn roll!  Coker was great example of that last year trading Johnson mid season.

Having a GM who was also a player i think helps with that mindset. Understanding father time is undefeated and you have to go with younger, faster players even when they don't have a ton of experience.

Love it and each move DM is doing this offseason is getting me to forget how much i hate our owner and back to feeling good about this team. Lets sign a Safety and rock this division this year!

I don't think it's unwarranted to think that he might be better than some of the guys we have signed/drafted(maybe even all of them, in the worst of all cases). However, he has very limited time left in his career and we are not going to be competitive during that minimal amount of time.

There was really little benefit to continuing down that road. You don't make the signings and draft the players we did and still having him getting significant snaps.

I just hope we have clearly upgraded at the end of the season.

I think they have already decided to keep him out this year.  After last year they are going to take their time, which I agree with you on it being the right call.  Try to save anything we can from this pick...

Signing Rico and drafted Etienne made this a much easier decision
