Could Jeremy Chinn be converted to MLB?

Sure it's an off-the-wall idea, but...

God knows we need a new one.  Whitehead is a big liability in an important spot.

At 6'3", 220, he's taller than Shaq or Whitehead (or any of our other LBs), and not that much lighter.

But he has an instinct for the ball, tackles well, is good in coverage, and can blitz.  Nobody's gonna replicate Luke's talent, but his overriding talent was anticipation, and you can't teach that.  From what I've seen from Chinn, he might play LB like Thomas Davis, who I believe was converted from S.

Am I nuts?

I'd rather him learn the position he was drafted for.  I'm not really concerned with any short term benefits we might get (if any) vs. the long term benefits of him learning how to play safety.

He currently isn’t big enough to fight off blockers in the run game. He also is currently playing well at his current position. 
 

With the defense as bad as it’s been let’s not try to changes things that aren’t currently broken.

So much easier and less likely to screw up Chinn by just brining in a MLB. Upgrading over Whitehead should be a cake walk.

Chinn needs to stay where he is since he is very effective there.

I do not like the idea, but a MLB in this D is more important that a S/OLB hybrid.  He has the size and speed to add 15 lbs and not lose much.  He is smart and seems to be a leader in the making.

On paper, it could be done. 

And some say, "Just sign a MLB" or "get a MLB in the draft".  Do your homework--there are not many out there.  Furthermore, if you want a QB in the first, and you want to upgrade LT, and you need a CB or 2, and....
 

We should always look at the big picture.

Because he's lined up at LB more than deep safety.

He's playing a variety of spots.  He's in the box, balling out in multiple ways.

I'd rather keep using Chinn as a versatile chess piece than shoehorn him into a role he's not nearly as well suited for.
