WG was highly regarded heading into the draft because he's a great guy and he interviewed well.

It had very little to do with his skill as a QB. Everyone just liked the guy.

I'd have been an early 2nd round pick by those measures!

He was one of those guys who was a decently hot name early on because pundits see stats. But the more feedback the pundits got from actual scouts, the further he fell down draft boards. Actual NFL talent evaluators were just never high on the guy.

Hurney never got the memo. He was kind of the David Newton of GMs.

i think rolling the dice on him was fine. no one has any idea who's going to hit and grier had a good enough body of work that it was justified at where he was. you never know which guys are going to figure it out and which guys are, like grier apparently, just not good enough at seeing it.

maybe not in the third but hurney always drafted players a round too early. if he could have drafted his first rounders the day before he would have.

Unless he’s shown tremendous improvement, I don’t see him being on the roster after this year (if he even makes the roster at all).  He was very, very bad and last year’s weird offseason didn’t help his development any.

Grier is another victim of Hurney’s idiocy.  Poor guy never had a shot.  Hasn’t performed well enough to earn one either.  The game is fast.  Really fast. He’s a good kid and probably a steady presence in the QB room.  That is the extent of his ability to impact this team.  Cheerleader with a clip board.

I will say, the more I read and watch of WG talking, the more you like the kid.  He's got a pretty high likeability factor.  It would be great if he could develop into a decent #2, but if he's not good enough, then that's the kiss of death for him.

I won't feel bad.  He's got a hot wife, his health, and he's made some decent money on his NFL contract.  And heck, he could still get ANOTHER contract as a back up.  WAS and BUF come to mind...

Oh yeah, I don’t want to throw a pity party for him.  Hes gonna be fine I’m sure.  He’ll move back to WV and sell real estate or coach a private HS team.  I’m not worried for his future.

Nobody thought he was a steal in the 3rd.  He floats his passes and doesnt go through his progressions.  The spread offense masked his limits and inflated his numbers.  He is not good

Well, I do know of one guy who thought he had a first round grade.

I think that guy went somewhere else, though (I forget where) 🤔

Grier was really good in college, and many pundits thought he was a steal in the 3rd round, and some guys thought he was better than Daniel Jones who was taken top 10...

I watch a lot WVU football and I think he is being completely honest... Grier was awesome in the wide-open spread offense of the BIG 12 where he was usually only making 1 read... like he said, the game is much faster at the pro level, and defenses are much quicker and better at disguising coverage... Grier has the physical skills to be a NFL QB

Hurney made plenty of mistakes, including Grier IMO given our other needs, but he certainly wasn't alone in thinking Grier was a good value with upside where he was picked.  I think Grier will have solid preseason, but as long as Brady and Rhule have their obsession with Tommy Stevens, I don't see a path for him being on the 53 man roster... maybe we can trade him for a conditional 7th or something to a team looking for a 3rd QB near roster cuts.

I'd be surprised if we find a trade partner for him.  He just did not perform well in the games.    I agree though, the dudes on the bubble, that's for sure.

    • Either way there's some tough teams on the schedule this year, on paper anyways.
    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
