I really liked Fields as a draft option for us. I believe that he could turn into a very good QB in the NFL. I also believe that our coaching staff believed that as well. I think they decided to go with Darnold because of his NFL experience and age. To be honest, it's a gamble either way, but I can't say that logic isn't in there decision and I'm not against it. I'm giving our coaching staff my full support through the ups and downs...

I think they went with Darnold because it didn’t cost them a top 10 pick like Fields would have. Plus there was no guarantee Fields was going to fall to us before we traded for Darnold. Fields rookie contract would have been nice for our salary cap for the next 4 years though…

Considering how Ohio state QBs have translated to the NFL and how quarterbacks have developed in Chicago, I don’t expect Fields to do well in the NFL.

The biggest concern I'd have from Fields doing well is that it emboldens Tepper to get more involved. Even more so if Darnold doesn't pan out.

Look, I was the biggest Fields fan pre-draft. Loved the kid. I was screaming at the TV for us to take him. But we didn't. We aren't getting a mulligan. He's a Bear. 

But now put yourself in David Tepper's shoes. You were right about Fields. You knew it, but you trusted your football people and it blew up in your face (scenario assuming Darnold is Jet's Darnold again.) Now when the draft comes around again, and you get a conviction about a prospect, you're probably more likely to throw your considerable influence around. That would be my concern. I hope that makes sense.

I took that as next time, meaning next draft, if we’re in position to draft a good QB and Tepper has fallen in love with a prospect, he will “force” the GM to select said QB. That just means the owner meddling into football operations, which isn’t always a good thing (I think that’s what he was saying).
