Former Panthers' QB taunted as "Checkdown King" by opposing team's safety

Somewhat related: Dan Pompei just posted a pretty good article to The Athletic (centered around Justin Fields, but with a mention of Newton) about how quarterbacks who are "the best athlete on the field" often struggle to win championships.

Quoting...

There’s a lesson in what happened with Jackson and the Ravens regarding Fields. A quarterback who is the best athlete can make his team significantly better. But he might not be able to achieve the ultimate goal of winning a championship unless he relies on more than athleticism and unless he has a complement of players and coaches around him who perform with consistency and excellence.

Other “best athlete” quarterbacks whose teams fell short include Michael Vick and Randall Cunningham. Cam Newton and Donovan McNabb helped their teams get to Super Bowls, but neither could get past inferior athletes — Newton lost to Peyton Manning, and McNabb was one of Tom Brady’s seven opposing quarterback victims.

He goes on to mention guys like John Elway and Steve Young who achieved championship victory, but only after their respective teams did a better job of building around them.

It's a good read for subscribers (link)

Cam didn't fall short though. And he certainly didn't lose to Manning. He was headhunted the entire game and was cheated out of biggest momentum play of the game with the Cotchery catch. We played like ass but we weren't allowed to compete when the NFL was setting up Peyton for his retirement trophy. Cam beat Brady twice.

The article isn't wrong about team building but eluding to Cam not surpassing his athleticism isn't fair. If Drew Brees had Cam's ability, he wouldn't play like Drew Brees.

Pompei didn't say Newton "fell short". That sentence was referencing Michael Vick and Randall Cunningham.

His quote about both Newton and McNabb was that they "helped their teams get to Super Bowls, but couldn't get past inferior athletes".

McNabb of course also has the dubious distinction of losing his lunch on the field 🤢

So you are saying Belichick is not showing another team what passes Cams arm can still make? And instead utilizing the aggressiveness of, to Cam unknown, dbs to build confidence in Cams short passing game?

Belichick has that safety so owned he don't even understand he is the b****.

It got progressively worse as the season went on.  By the end of the season, the field looked a mile long with him running the offense.

How? Week 17 vs Jets (When his arm should have been at the weakest point all season!!) 21/30 242 yards and 3 Tds. 8.1 avg. It's funny the narratives people stick to. Once upon a time Yes, Cam had a hurt shoulder and a hurt foot, but those days are gone unless he gets injured again which obviously is a possibility. Gonna be a lot of people surprised at the Cam Newton they see in 2021 though. I've been reading the bullsh*t that's been spewed about how he's no longer a competent NFL Qb all offseason long, going to be great to see Cam make all these idiots look foolish

Inconsistency was always Newton's biggest weakness. Used to say he could throw a pass that made you go OMG then follow it up with one that made you go WTF.

That's a big reason why I always compared him to Brett Favre.

(John Elway was like that too)

Probably more spot on than people may realize. I'd totally agree. Gunslinger.

Patriots are probably trying to control that. Change his game.

Jake was a slightly less version of both aside from mobility. Early Brett was a run threat.

We had good Jake bad Jake, also a gunslinger. Good Jake could actually fool you into thinking you had a bonafide franchise QB.

The way ya'll post gifs of that as a gotcha tool really makes me wonder about how some of you operate like you're almost glad it happened. This is a bizarre fanbase sometimes I swear.

It's obvious to anyone with half a brain (and with the propensity for objectivity) that Cam was anticipating the ball popping out and bouncing to his right. Which it did. He just couldn't pull it from the defender. He didn't dive on it initially, but he's in the scrum. Nothing about that man's career would ever lead you to believe he was scared or a quitter.

    • This 1000%.  Hey who wants to sign with the guy that couldn't even get his client the guaranteed contract of a 3rd round pick?  Lmao
    • I don't think it's any weird or unique clause, it's the offset language, same thing so many contract disputes are over. It just means that including it, if a player is cut and then signed by another team, the original team would be able to subtract how much they're getting paid by the new team from what they still owe him on their guaranteed money. For example, it's why Russell Wilson signed for the minimum last year with the Steelers as that was included in his Denver contract.  So if he signed with the Steelers for $1 million, he'd get $1 million less from the Broncos, if it was $2 million, he'd get $2 million less, basically he couldn't make any more money than he was already going to make, so you sign for the minimum to not take unnecessary cap room from your new team while giving extra cap room to your old one. The problem with trying to include it in rookie deals is that a team trying to include it, it says they think they don't really believe the player will make it 4 years with the team before they cut them.  And this usually comes up with one or two rookies in most seasons, the difference is it's usually handled much more quietly and not as public and ugly as this one. The other difference is that it's happening with the Bengals, which I believe I saw are one of the few (or only?) team that doesn't have protections for rookies in rookie and mini camps to be able to participate even if they haven't signed their contract yet.  The other teams have injury protections that allow them to still play, but the Bengals do not, which is also why this one is so public and ugly, as most the time this happens, the rookie is still participating in the rookie and subsequent mini camps, giving them more time to get the contract done before training camp when they'd then hold out.
