Postgame thoughts. Preseason game 2

1st team OL.  I’m going to go back and watch this week.  But they seemed to do a pretty dam good job in Pass Pro.
they did struggle in the red zone getting absolutely zero push.

in pass pro in the redzone they held on, but the WR’s really struggled to get open.  Agree with the poster above that maybe we see Sam scramble in that situation in a actual game.

Still worried about our redzone, but i don't think any of the looks on the goal line were very pass friendly.

Sam looked okay. A bit jittery but didn't panic.

Our D-line has depth for days. Luvu has been a pleasant surprise, could be our Kerr this year.  And it also seems like we can have some faith in some of our developmental corners in STO and Taylor.

Terrance Marshall and Shi Smith are good WRs. I wouldn't be surprised to see David Moore become the odd man out.

My hot take is Tremble would become the Chinn of this season among the fanbase. Dude is just violent.

Steve was good but a little awkward. I think he has a little bit of trouble filtering his takes from Steve Smith take to commentator take, that all said, I hope he sticks around for preseason games. It's a treat to hear his takes.

Missed the game again tonight. How did Horn look out there?

He didn’t catch any action that I saw

they had a backup QB and hurt WRs.   Wasn’t really a chance to have someone test him

Steelers should given him some work….if their starters play.  Hard to guess how teams will run game 3.  Lot seemed to use game 2 as the heavy game.  Big Ben got a good many reps today

The good

- Defense won’t be elite but should be above average to good (top ten) 1st unit got gashed on a big run but otherwise looked pretty fast and aggressive in limited action. Some concern at linebacker and secondary but considering just two years ago it was one of the worst defenses in the league it’s going in the right direction.

- Frank Luvu stood out with the backups and will make the team.

- Grier had his best game and surprised some people.

- This draft should have lots of starters and contributors sooner rather than later. Not trying to get too hyped this early but guys from all rounds have having been showing up and playing hard. Might be one of our better drafts. Shouldn’t be too hard to accomplish since both Hurney and Gettlemen could F up a cup of coffee.

The Bad

- QB situation still sucks. I gave Grier credit but even terrible players will have their moments. Walker is really banking on his Temple connection at this moment. I don’t see him or Grier as worthy of roster spots. Probably will end up bringing in someone else’s cut or PS player. Darnold had limited action but still think he leans more towards backup quality than solid starter. Just don’t feel it with him combined with his known history. He’s our best hope out of these 3 QBs though. Also, seemed like the staff was hesitant to pass with him in the red zone. Really weird how they are handling him. Hopefully we can see more Friday.

- Bradys play calling in the red zone is still bad. Might be preseason but it’s not like we didn’t see that all of last year too.

- Joey Slye continues to be terribly inconsistent. Need to find a new kicker.

- DBO sign. So far two preseason games and in both games the Panthers lead in penalties. I mean if it was working that would be one thing but lmao take that damn thing down.

He was targeted on that 2nd/3rd and long on the drive after the int. No breathing room and even with  a decently placed ball showed excellent timing and quick hands to deflect the ball and force an incompletion.

yeah yeah scrub qb and likely scrub wr but technique is technique, and Horn showed excellent technique there.

    • Ward could fly up the rankings with a good year.
    • Ask me in five years whether this draft class was good or not. Having said that, I'll grade the 2019 draft... R1 P16: Brian Burns - I'll argue this was a good pick. At the minimum, he was worth enough to have gotten a seriously good offer of picks which, in retrospect, we should've taken. But we still got something for him and his new team gave him a ton of money. R2 P37: Greg Little - Utter and complete flop. Only real value was somehow getting a 7th rounder from the Dolphins. R3 R100: Will Grier  - Played godawful the rare times he was on the field. Somehow still in the league. R4 P115: Christian Miller - Nothing of note. R5 P154: Jordan Scarlett - I don't think he even lasted two years. R6 P212: Dennis Daley - Some flashes of promise but we eventually traded him for some picks. Was terrible in Tennessee. I'll consider this a success since we got picks back. R7 P237: Terry Godwin - Did not last here long at all.  In summary, we got one quality starter... who is now gone. Daley might've been the second best player of this class and he was a middling backup at best. Burns saved this class from being a complete disaster.  D+
    • You can add that to the assessment of the whole offseason, but not the draft itself
