Records for college coaches hired directly to NFL for 1st two seasons

Jim Harbaugh 24-7-1
Chip Kelly 20-12
Bill O'Brien 18-14
Butch Davis 16-16
Nick Saban 15-17
Doug Marrone 15-17
Kliff Kingsbury 13-18-1
Steve Spurrier 12-20
Greg Schiano 11-21
Matt Rhule 10-21
Bobby Petrino 3-10

FWIW Jimmy Johnson came straight from college and went 8-24 in his first 2 seasons before winning a couple SBs... Granted, he also improved by 6 wins year 1 to year 2, Rhule has declined from year 1 to year 2.

It’s not even about the record for me. We look worse this year than last with any easier schedule this year. I normally agree about giving coaches 3 years as long as you’re seeing something after 2 even if the record doesn’t show that. We flat out suck and look lifeless. He needs to go now.

Here are the records of the under .500 coaches beyond their second season:

Butch Davis 16-16  4 Seasons (24-35)
Nick Saban 15-17  2 seasons (returned to college)
Doug Marrone 15-17  7 seasons (38-60)
Kliff Kingsbury 13-18-1 3 seasons (23-23-1)
Steve Spurrier 12-20  2 seasons (returned to college)
Greg Schiano 11-21  2 seasons (returned to college)
Matt Rhule 10-21  2 seasons (?)
Bobby Petrino 3-10 less than 1 season

This suggests the odds are stacked against Matt Rhule being a success in the NFL.

Yikes, it’s even worse than I thought.  We aren’t winning another game this year so he’s actually worse than Schiano, and with more talent.  Very impressive.

And remember how well Buc's fans took to their great "Former College Coach"

    • Okay then, tell me what your expectations are for Thielen, XL, and Coker this year If someone wants to come out there and say they think Thielen is only getting 600-700 yards this year, then yea, I'm going to then expect T-Mac to get to 1,000. If someone wants to say they think XL or Coker is going to fall back to 300 yards this year, then yea, I'm going to expect T-Mac to get to 1,000. People seem to think I'm making excuses for why T-Mac can't get there, but it's the literal opposite, my expectations for him stem from my belief our other WRs for the first time in who knows how long.   We finally have a legitimate and full WR room, not sure that's happened since the Smitty and Moose days.  It's going to make them all better players, but it will also suppress all of their stats as they're all going to cannibalize each other a little bit.
    • It’s certainly not my shining moment. But I still made it. Running the Sacramento marathon in December and hope to have a more Jake Delhomme-level of stardom there. The Everyman that overcomes obstacles to almost reach the pinnacle of success only to have it taken away by Adam Vinateri.
