If nothing matter until you find a franchise QB what is the best way to build the team?

I'm not saying that having a franchise QB is 100% necessary to go to and win a Superbowl but it's sure seems like Tepper believes that.  Let's assume that is the case.  How do you build the team?

I don't think there is a single legit or semi-legit QB available through trade or in the draft that we haven't seriously looked into getting.  Bridgewater, Stafford, Watson, Fields, Darnold, Newton, Darnold, Watson...you get the idea.

To me it sure seems like the marching orders are build the D and do everything in the known universe to get a franchise QB.  Take every chance and look under every bush.  If it ends up costs us draft picks, coaches or wins in that quest, it's worth it.  It's better to be elite or horrible.  Your success goes as your QB goes.  Leave no stone unturned.

Do you agree?

All recent (past 10 or so years) SB teams and winners had franchise QBs or QBs playing at a high level.

the model seems to be to build the team and hope to get a QB that turns Elite or has a year or to so of Elite play (see Cam 2015, Baltimore 2013, etc).

The coach, QB, and MLB are the soul of any team. Their mistakes and leadership are magnified as they factor in to every play. If they are not capable of standing toe to toe with the best in their decision making, then a team has no chance. The rest of the team will embody their leaders and playmaker.

After that it is the core of leadership. IMO 5 on offense and 4 on defense. These are the players you pay and build around QUICKLY. They DO NOT need to be physically gifted and the most talented in the league. They MUST be smart, ultra competitive, unapologetic, and care more about their team rather than themselves. If you don't have this core in place in 2 years with an upswing toward being the best in the league, move on and start again.

Then it is surrounding that core with the best complimentary talent available in the NFL. Reverse this formula and start with complimentary talent for success at the college level. The cream will rise to the top. Core players always leave quickly. Recruiting is king.

The Panthers defense embodies the college formula.

Cam is the best available option atm for QB. Search for an improvement and know when the timing is right when you've found the best QB in the NFL... hopefully unknown to the rest of the league. MLB defensive leader is a must (Devin Lloyd will be the answer for the team that drafts him). Coach is without a doubt a must. Rhule is no where in the same arena as the best coaching minds in the NFL.

Nothing else matters if they miss on all 3 immediate musts.

As for the core...

You have Cam, CMC, and Abdullah to build around. Two more leaders/winners needed. I like Linderbaum at C in the draft for a 10+ year leader and I'd trade for a player like Hunter Henry, Steffon Diggs, or Justin Jefferson.

Defense has Shaq and Chinn. Adding Devin Lloyd as the core leader. Draft DT Ridgeway to lead the DL.

Panthers have no shot with Rhule at the helm though. He'll always be outcoached and unwilling to part with his college ways.

    • I mean, poster also said Young or Mahomes, it would have made no difference.  If there was way to actually test that hypothetical, I would sell every belonging I have and wager that Mahomes would indeed yield different results.  Mahomes automatically changes the D coverages.  He automatically changes the threats.  He attacks and threatens a field different vastly different.   We have seen good QBs and great QBs play behind horrific OLs in a single season....and they don't default into being the worst team in the NFL.  Frank Reich was old, stubborn and not creative enough to deal with an anomaly QB like Bryce.  The best QB in the NFL wouldn't be handicapping Frank, they would be enhancing Frank.  Starting week 1, Frank didn't even trust Bryce with basics....Frank gave him I what I feel comfortable with you being able to do offense.  Which took throws and plays off the table because Bryce couldn't do early on what a bad vet in Dalton could.  Mahomes would not yield the same results.
    • All I have to say to this really, is it sounds nice and downgrades Stroud to make Young look better is more like what this take does. Look at the WR numbers the year before and then the year with Stroud. He made them better, not the other way around. That’s my opinion. I appreciate you designating that it was yours. Many state these things as facts.
    • but what if.....and here me out....the pro Bryce Young stuff was coming from people under Fitterer.  You know, the people who are employed to feed him that input.  And they happen to all still be employed here.  when Rhule was fired I desperately wanted Fitterer fired.  It set things up for Fitterer to be the sacrificial lamb the next time things went poorly....every time we move on from a disaster, we are retaining a heavy % of the folks who helped bring the disaster we are "moving on from".  Everyone argued Fitterer probably could be great and it was all Rhule.  We are just repeating the same stuff to a degree IMO.   Panthers needed a clean slate post Rhule era.  Needed another post Frank era.  Things were just too bad or too dysfunctional IMO to be salvaging so much.   We keep failing to do that.
