Orlovsky: Pickett doesn’t have anything that isn’t coachable

I'm as uncertain on Pickett as the next guy but this is a silly take.

Translation: there's nothing special about Pickett that should warrant a sixth pick. He's not a QB whose shoulders the team can stand upon when the going gets tough. When he meets another playoff-caliber team with a superior QB, that's the end of the line.

2005 Draft San Francisco picks Alex Smith first. Green Bay drafts Aaron Rodgers #24.

The Panthers are the 49ers if they do this Kenny Pickett thing they've been telegraphing for two years. If you go with consistency (2yrs at 70%completion), accuracy, measurables 6'4", toughness (against doctors advice played full contact football and put up 4186yrds 36tds 8int,) hobbled while healing. Big time accurate arm. It's not Pickett at #6. San Francisco would love to have that one back.

Guess who Aaron Rodgers is this draft? Carson Strong 2022!

And Joe Burrow…

Or Drew Brees...

It's basically buying into the notion that if someone is a physical freak, you can easily teach them how to be a great pro quarterback.

Except that's not really true, and more than one team has made big draft mistakes by adhering to that philosophy.

That’s also true about Tom Brady though in theory.

Not really unless he just means physical traits. I don’t think it’s possible to teach the dog and clutch that Brady has. You either have that or you don’t.

Yea that's what frustrates me about these takes.  A lot of the best qbs dont have anything physically elite.   The most important part of being a qb is between the ears.  Second to that is accuracy.  Neither of those show up as elite physical traits or exciting flashy ideas but it's the truth.   So to say those things can be coached, especially making quick decisions etc. Is ridiculous,  some of the stuff between the ears cant be coached any more than running fast or throwing it far.

Pretty much this. He'll be a serviceable game manager. I won't make any predictions about his being able to protect the football because I'm really skeptical about his hands (not the hand width, but the reason for it...he's got issues with his thumb). But he's a guy that if you have the team built up around him, he won't be the reason you lose.

He'll be an upgrade over what we've had the last couple years, but he'll peak earlier than the other QBs available....which is good if you're a HC on a short leash. You just won't see much beyond that. Higher floor, lower ceiling than the other top options.

All that said, not my first or second choice from this class.

I'm on a QB bandwagon every season. Usually the guy nobody is talking about or trying to move heaven and earth to get. Just the stats none of the hype. It was Justin Herbert(OROY), Kyle Trask, now Carson Strong.

    • Gold is a tool... lmao Team O+G Forreals tho, if you haven't been watching Ovies and Giglio's OG After Dark breakdowns so far this playoffs, you've been missing out!
    • He is by no means perfect, to me it looks like he is very poor att what he is poor at and very good at what is is good at. I take that over everything good but nothing above good.  Fit is a question, Young is not at toss it up gunslinger. It is easy to imagine a 1000+ season with a guy like (prime) Wilson or Jake.
