Would you trade 9 for Fields - straight up?

The Carolina Panthers passed up on their chance to grab Justin Fields almost two years ago, instead selecting cornerback Jaycee Horn with the eighth pick in the 2021 draft. But will they get a redo this spring?

Well, 33rd Team’s scouting department believes they may—or at least should. In their latest 2023 mock draft, the group of T.J. McCreight, Kevin Cohn, Justin Casey and Evan Pritt—all of whom have NFL front office experience—gets creative with Carolina’s first-round selection.

Rather than drafting and developing their own franchise quarterback in this projection, the Panthers trade their ninth overall pick to the Chicago Bears in exchange for Fields. Yup, straight up!

Fields is fresh off a record-breaking 2022 campaign, one in which he rushed for the most yards (178) by a quarterback in a game. The electric playmaker finished up with 1,143 yards on the ground, second only to Lamar Jackson’s all-time mark for single-season rushing yards by a quarterback (1,206) set back in 2019.

Through the air, Fields was a bit less impressive from a statistical standpoint. He completed 60.4 percent of his throws for 2,242 yards, 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

But would new Panthers head coach Frank Reich be able to unlock Fields’ gifts as a passer? And if so, would he—with two years of NFL play already under belt—expedite the process and be worth the ninth pick?

No.  His development as a passer has been non-existent thus far.  INT rate is far too high and completion percentage too low.  Once teams start treating him like Vick, he'll be just another backup.

If we can’t get Stroud, then yes. But I’m not sure they’d get a high first for him if they’re moving him and Carr is still a free agent.

First reaction is nah. Would have to do more in-depth research to find out what I’d think of it though, go and watch all his throws.  I haven’t seen anything impressive outside of his legs so far, though.

1. The Bears aren’t going to trade Fields. 
2. If the Bears were trying to trade Fields I don’t believe a single first rounder is going to do it for a multitude of reasons. The Bears moved up to get him. So they invested multiple picks. He has improved as a passer despite his lack of weapons around him. He has shown he might be the top runner in all of football which will allow him more time to develop as a passer. He got an MVP vote this year. 
3. if we could have Fields going into his year 3 for just the #9 overall pick that would be a steal for us and I’d do it in a heartbeat. 
4. It wouldn’t make sense from a team standpoint for the Bears. Are you a better team with Stroud, Levis, Young or Richardson plus another player at 9 Vs Fields plus all the additional picks you get could for trading down one or two times? 
 

Does it make sense for us? Yes. Does it make sense for the Bears? No.
