Why Bryce young will be the pick and we should be excited

Wilson and Brees were short but both were stocky and well built. Bryce is short and small. Alabama has a world class weight training facility. If they had years with him and he is still 180 to 185, that's who he is. He is too small for a long career in the NFL and that gamble would kill Carolina for years. We are going to take stroud.

There is good reason to think Young will be the pick--most of the NFL experts I have heard that have shared an opinion say he is the best QB in the draft and should be the #1 pick.   They are aware of his size when they said so.  Kyler Murray was 5'10" and a #1 overall pick, so the precedent has been set. He weighs 205 lbs.  He has gone to 2 pro bowls. He runs more than Young will run, but he does not process the field as quickly and he is not as accurate.  He was just paid a $46m per year salary and was considered to be an elite qb until 2022 when he was injured, overpaid, and not effective.  An ex-teammate (Kelvin Beachum) recently said that Murray needs to "grow up a little bit" if he wants to lead the franchise.  Based on my perception, Murray is childish, a front runner, and a whiner.  Bryce Young, on the other hand, is respected and admired by teammates and opponents (see what Georgia players said about him).  Young is a student of the game, a selfless contributor to the overall objectives, etc.  Mentally, he is a man.  I would say that he is more advanced mentally than Kyler Murray and he processes more quickly. So why is his size such an important issue to fans but it doesn't seem to be enough of a factor with the NFL experts (Marc Ross, for example, former Giants GM) to drop him behind Stroud.

So what does Stroud have that Young does not?  Size. He throws a pretty ball and it is on point and on time.  He is my preference between the two, but the "experts" I have heard from on NFL Network like Young over Stroud.  If the same size, would Young be better?  I think so.  So then the issue comes down to how much weight you give to weight and height.

I think Young (mentally) is far above the other QBs in the draft.  He ran a more complex offense and he was able to process at the level of an NFL elite QB.  Stroud's offense was not as challenging, but he did go through progressions.  He successfully performed what he was asked to do.  So over the next 40 days, I think that is the area of these QBs that will be measured--processing.  If they are equal, Stroud is the pick.  If Young dominates in this area, and he could likely do that, I could see the Panthers going with Young and I could see that being the best decision. 

I know that it is fun to discuss and will dominate the discussions over the next few days, but we should all state our perspectives based on the understanding that we simply do not know.  We do not know that Young will be injured more than Stroud.  We do not know which will have a great career and which will not--if the case.  We are all speculating.  This post was created with an open mind--I prefer Stroud right now, but I could be wrong.

I get the thought process but everytime stats are brought into it they don't correlate with what everyone keeps assuming. Like if anything it's the taller guys who tend to get their passes batted. Probably because unlike a short QB, they've never had put as much thought or work into their verticle placement so they get lazy at times.

Would things have been easier for Steve Smith if he was six inches taller? Sure, but it was never a problem because he worked with what God gave him and overcame the disadvantage by being great.  Young's height is part of his game for better or worse and he's the top prospect anyway. He's already overcome it and we're still acting like he's going to get every other pass batted down. Pros aren't that much taller than college players.

Young has great intangibles, but just not the body to hold up to the punishment he's going to get in the NFL , Cam was a linebacker and RB in a QBs Body, and he didn't have a long career, how do you expect someone with body type of a kicker to survive one season

I actually think Young will fall way down in the draft because of it

This.  There is also one other (intangible) factor that is not frequently mentioned: leadership.  Some people have it within them, others don’t.  It is almost impossible to define and measure but, you know it when you truly see it.  It is much more than swagger and bravado. 

If one of these two young men has both processing and leadership traits, pick him.

      Hard to interpret some of Brugler's opinions. Capable of running a robust route tree sounds like a lazy thing to say - I'm sure just about every slot TE is capable of running a full route tree... I want to know if he is currently able to (which from tape leads me to a no). Granted, it's pretty common for most receivers/TE not having a full route tree developed before they get drafted. Agility/acceleration after the catch hasn't shown up on his tape (at least his Oregon tape) for those dig/out breaking routes while it has for the seam and slant routes. Agree he has a good physical build and he is very good running seam routes. His build definitely helps him to shield defenders and create a large target point for the QB. Drops were a concern, but it could be focus drops just like T-Mac was/is prone to. Run blocking is an accurate statement, but again, we have only seen him run block in the slot/backfield - inline blocking is a whole different animal. With his athleticism, he definitely has a high ceiling. I just think he also has a low floor and don't like taking that big of a risk on a mid 1st rounder. I think this is a deep TE draft and would much rather target one in the 3rd or later. He's very boom or bust to me - bust in terms of being worth a 1st round pick, not an out of the NFL in a few years type bust. I feel like he gives me Evan Engram vibes. Not saying that Evan Engram was/is a bad NFL player, just that most people would agree he shouldn't have been drafted in the 1st.

      I mean I would love 6-1. It’s funny the hurricanes usually dominate the first game and win by three or four goals. But keep the second game close. It would be nice if it’s the reverse of that tonight.

      Brugler has him as TE1 and going to the Ravens in the first.  Apparently Sadiq's football IQ is pretty high (interviewed very well).  Also he was an WR and CB in high school.  This is why I always thought his route running was solid.  I'm sure it needs some polishing but for a TE it's pretty good. nfl.com Built like a bodyguard with a compact, well-defined frame. Capable of running a robust route tree. Gets in and out of breaks with good snap and separation. Vandalizes defensive seams with impunity against man coverage. Survives collisions with catches thanks to his hand strength. Shows off agility and acceleration after the catch. Fits up run blocks with proper positioning and base width. Grips and presses forward with moving feet to stay connected. -Again I don't know if we should take him but if he goes to the right team he could become a scary weapon at the next level.  I just like him as a prospect.
