Where do you "rank" Burns as Panthers all-time DEs?

If you're talking pure athletic ability he's up there behind Peppers.

If you're talking strictly DEs (no 3-4 OLB guys like Greene) and actual productivity and ability to produce in all areas of the position, it goes Peppers, Johnson/Rucker (basically interchangeable), Hardy, Allen, Burns.

Burns is an athletic freak but is one-dimensional, a poor man's Dwight Freeney.

He’s one more good season from passing virtually everyone on that list. He’s going to finish as the number two guy.

the run the ball/stop the run hip hip hurrah people are just gonna have to cope with the way the game has changed

It’s hard to tell, he was misused his rookie year and only has 4 years under his belt. If he’s constant he can end up being top 2-3 but you are comparing people with full careers vs 4 years of production. In 4 years he has 2 less sacks than Greg Hardy did in his career.

Pretty much.

Kinda hard to rank any player on an all-time list until his career is over.

I think you have to rank them together with other EDGE rushers that we had, not just pure DEs

For me it's

1. Julius Peppers

2. Kevin Greene

3. Charles Johnson

4. Brian Burns

5. Mike Rucker

6. Lamar Lathon

7. Greg Hardy

8. Mario Addison

9. Al Wallace

10. Hasson Reddick

Burns over Hardy. Hell I'd put Addison over Hardy.

Hardy had one good year followed by a great year then pissed it all away by being stupid. His personality was a contributing factor to his lore which is why people think he was better than he actually was.

Burns also has more sacks in 4 years than Hardy did in 5. He's been more consistent. As was Addison - 4 straight years of 9+ sacks is damn good production.

Peppers

Johnson

Rucker

Addison

Burns

Hardy

Not a knock on Burns at all, he's only played 4 years though. One more solid year and he jumps Addison and Rucker on my list.

I think OP is talking about the player and their talent on the field. By that metric alone Hardy is basically second to Peppers. If he wasn't a moron he'd still be in the league. Hardy had a motor and ability to play the run that Burns doesn't display. But Burns edges him out in athleticism.

This thread is wild; there’s no reason for people to hate Burns like this. Charles Johnson didn’t start getting sacks until his fourth season. Addison took five years to become a player. Rucker had three, maybe four good years as a pass rusher. Burns has already basically matched the peak three-year stretches of every other edge in franchise history (Pep excluded), and hasn’t even gotten to his second contract yet. He’s number two. It’s not close.

EDIT: Kevin Greene’s three years were better. Burns should pass him in a couple of years, but right now Greene’s got a better case than I realized.

The OP's list is about right IMO.  If Hardy drama didn't happen we may be listing him right behind Peppers.  I would put Rucker and Johnson about at the same line though.  None of the others on that list have ran past and missed the QB as much as Burns.  I agree he hasn't had the same help around him but he just disappears form games (and not because of double team) and misses so many sacks.   This isn't meant to be "Burns hate" as I'm glad we have him (though I would have made the trade).
