That's my initial thought.  But are there any strategic reasons for keeping it a secret?

Yeah, but it's highly unlikely to happen.

Let's say that our highest rated QB is Young, but we think Levis & Stroud are close seconds. We play everything close to the vest & a few days before the draft... well, yesterday happens. A story drops about how we're really gonna pick Levis.

Houston really wants Levis, big time, so they start offering trades, at some point their GM slips & we are now 99% sure that they want Levis & are scared we're gonna take him.

We respond to their trade offer with something insane like their #2 pick this year, & their 1st & 2nd rounders in '24 and '25.

They reject that. Then a photo comes out with Reich talking to someone in front of a white board & at the top you can just make out an "L" right before his head obscures the rest of what's there.

Houston panics, & offers #2, & #12 (iirc) this year, & their 1st & 2nd rounder next year, plus a player at a position we need to shore up.

We take the deal, they get Levis, & we get a nice haul of picks especially regaining a 1st next year.

Or they pick Young & yell "Haha! Gotcha!" & we say "Cool" & pick Levis or Stroud, BPA at #12, & go on about our business knowing we easily won that trade.

Now again, this is a pipe dream. If this happens, I can apparently see the future, so the next billion dollar jackpot numbers are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 32.

Short version, some team might panic & greatly "over pay" in a trade.

If it's who I think it is (the previously misspelled Bryce Young guy) that's his second ban in like a week or so.

(not counting any other IDs he might have previously been banned under)

It was him and we noticed it right after he joined and started posting. We were just kind of curious before he started trying to meet up and fight someone again. He veered from his usual poo.

Iirc, pre-CBA teams were already starting to negotiate contracts with some players before the draft.

Yep, I seem to remember Sam Bradford having that huge contract in place before he was even drafted.

The weird thing is the NFL wants suspense and ratings leading to the first pick...which is often the least suspenseful. The gamesmanship starts at pick 2.

    • I'll be patiently waiting to see what OL additions we snatch off the waiver wire.
    • Look don't get me wrong here. I'm not arguing it's going to just change his arm talent overnight. I'm just saying doing anything on the physical front after the GM who stuck his neck out for him over the concerns around his physical traits got fired is better than doing nothing. That's another layer. It could easily be argued overall he needed to add at least 10 pounds not just for the sake of working in the pocket and not going down so easily but let's be honest eventually no matter how much we invest in the OL he's going to get hit some and those hits will add up. His frame as it stands is only going to absorb so much over a 17 game season. Oh definitely good or bad we will have to run a lot of under center stuff. Bryce will either look good or flounder. But our offense will remain stagnant if we just keep running shotgun plays 90% of the time. You're telegraphing your offense otherwise. That's why I'm not giving Chuba Hubbard too hard of a time over his YPC last year. We weren't fooling anyone. We'll see what Canales has cooked up. It better be pretty damn clever.
    • Why would a team ever not be aggressive in improving the roster? It may look different from year to year but even the best rosters churn at the bottom. That's a no-brainer.
