The question of the day: is Derrick Brown good, elite, or fine?

He’s a hood above average DT but he’s not elite. Elite IMHO means you are stopping the run and rushing the passer as well.

Damn autocorrect keeps changing good to hood. I literally just watched it do it again and fixed it.

Depends on what you want out of your defensive tackle. Take up space, eat blockers and make a play against the run? He’s ideal. Want him to sack the QB? You can’t ignore his lack of sacks and thus he’s almost through his rookie contract and has how many sacks in his career?

He wasn't a great sacking DT in college either. He is just a run stuffer.

He's not elite but he's better than good. He's a great 2nd tier DT whose impact isn't realized purely by stats. He takes up blockers to create space for the defensive playmakers. I think he's better than Star was here and we missed Star a ton when we let him walk years ago.

People need to stop box score scouting.

His pass rush is better than people realize.  Just look at his pass rush grade also.  Sacks don't tell the whole story, often the guy that gets the sack isn't the guy that caused the sack.  Pressures are important.

Either way, If he has another year like last year he will get paid as being elite, so people might shocked at contract time.

Panthers Pick Up Fifth-Year Option on DT Derrick Brown

Carolina makes a decision on Derrick Brown.
CAROLINA PANTHERS

As expected, the Carolina Panthers will pick up the fifth-year option on defensive tackle Derrick Brown, the team announced Monday.

The former seventh overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft has become a key fixture on the Panthers' defense despite having a mini-slump during his sophomore season in 2021.

In three seasons with the team, Brown has accumulated 142 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 33 QB hits, and six sacks. This past season was his best as he set a single-season career high in tackles (67) and QB hits (12), to go along with five tackles for loss and a sack.

With Carolina switching to a 3-4 defensive scheme under Ejiro Evero, Brown will play more of a defensive end position, which should allow him to generate more of a pass rush. Free agent addition Shy Tuttle is slated to start at the nose.

    • Yeah I'm still not sure about Canales' play calling but I'll give him another season. Still can't quite figure out why you think Young won't work out. His numbers with Theilen are as good as any QB Theien's ever had - including the three games he has started with Rogers this year. Cokers' numbers are as good as Theilens and he is an UDFA and TMac is in the run for ORTY with Young as his QB. Young's throwing more accurately now (from 21.5% in 23 to 16.5% this year) and he has shown he can make the throws in clutch moments. If you take into account he was saddled with XL, Chark, Mingo and Johnson for receivers at one point, had a coaching staff his first year that didn't want him and a current coach who is suspect at play calling, I'm not sure he has been as bad as people here say. I know he has had terrible moments/games but most qb's still on their rookie contract will.  Anyway, had to give my weekly BY plug. Guess I thought this was the perfect time lol.
    • He missed a lot of time. Was slow getting back up to speed. And we have an offense that is not exactly WR friendly so his targets were low.  How many targets does anyone get when you have 120 yards passing, 54 yards passing, 160 yards, most of the time? It probably took the time it needed to take.
    • The 5th year option jus gives them a little more time to make their decision and figure out the position going forward.  The idea that it means hes def gonna get a extension is asinine.
