2021 was a good draft.

Drafting two starters in a draft means a lot more if you're a winning team. When you're one of the worst teams in the NFL... anyone could draft two starters.  Also, you have to look at who we passed on and add that to your assessment.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we have had better since then. Like you said, it's probably our best in the past decade if I cared to dig into it. I'm hoping that our drafting has improved but I have not seen anything to indicate that it has.

2017 was good even though Samuel and Mccaffrey no longer here. Those 2 along with Moton is probably our best 1 st and 2nd round picks in the last decade.

I agree with OP. 4 players on a second contract is a really, really good draft. nevermind all the other noise, that's it that's the bottom line for grading a draft imo. 2 starters+ is an above average draft in the NFL. Hate on it all you want, but them the facts. Go look it up.

This is true. In general you want to get at least the following out of every draft for it to be considered a good class:

 - 1 quality (above average to elite) starter
 - 1 solid starter
 - 1 solid backup
 - 1 contributor/backup/special teamer

Obviously it depends on how many picks you have, but we checked all four boxes in 2021 with Horn, Chuba, Tremble and Christensen.

There are exceptions, of course. I'd argue that 2011 was a great draft for us despite missing on every player we drafted except Cam because the one guy we did hit on became our franchise QB (the same will likely hold true of 2023 if Bryce ends up becoming that guy long-term) but that is a good general gauge for how good any particular draft class is.

2017 was a ‘solid’ draft. Had Brady been given a real shot at LT, Ickey would not of been the pick. Brady being our franchise LT elevates that greatly.

First 3 picks of 2001 all were legit HOF talent. Had Jenkins stayed in Charlotte and stayed away from the alcohol he’s a lock first ballot HOF. Jenkins took the first Bucs game over and broke Mr Automatica. What DT blocks kicks? SS89 in the playoffs?

And this is the point I belabor… all pro talent raises the level of everyone else on the team.

If they hit at a position of need, great… but the first two rounds HAVE TO HIT.  Drafting for Need is always a reach.

That draft is a failure alone for passing on Surtain for Horn, it was such an easy call.  Not sure why they got cute.

I consider it a bad draft for a different reason. When Sewell went at 7, I thought for sure we were going to go with Slater at 8. Anyone who watched his film could see he was an elite LT prospect. Footwork, balance, bend, hands were all good and he had dominated against elite college edge talent. We haven't had a cornerstone LT since Gross and still don't. For me, this was such an easy call here.

My first 3 picks I had wanted were

1st: Sewell/Slater - I had them 1a and 1b

2nd: Creed Humphrey - we needed a center and he was the best in the draft

3rd: Nico Collins - That was more of a Michigan homer pick and I was about 60/40 he would translate to the NFL level, but I still considered him a good WR2/WR3 if he did. Even I've been surprised by his success.

I would have considered Slater/Humphrey a home run even if no one else had worked out.

    • considering [Dave] Canales enters Year 3 working for an impulsive owner. There’s not much room to slide backwards from an 8-9 season and 13-21 overall record. It doesn’t help that his primary job has been the development of quarterback Bryce Young, and the progress there has been inconsistent. Canales was supposed to turn the former top pick into a franchise quarterback. If that doesn’t happen by next January, the Panthers could be looking for both a new coach and quarterback." —————- The format of that doesn’t display on my iPad I had to paste it as plain text to see it so I am leaving it here to refer to… I am gonna disagree with a lot of that.  First reference is Tepper. That interview posted here a few days back gave me the impression that he is really happy with his FO. And Canales. Seat isn’t even warm as of right now. IMO.  The assertion that Canales is supposed to turn Young into a franchise QB is something I have never bought. First, how could anyone look at 2023Bryce and see a can’t miss Franchise player?  He was for sure a could miss.  I am not sure it was fix Bryce or you are both gone. Maybe that will happen The longer it drags on, I think maybe the more likely a total house cleaning could be an outcome. I mean it is only year 3 of Canales coming up. But as a couple of people like to point out, he has shown other concerning flaws that might damage his stock.  As far as the hot seat, mid season with 2-3 wins I would imagine yeah it would be pretty warm. I think a small regression to say 7 or maybe even 6 wins would be tolerated but the seat is warm for 2027. Depends on the circumstances.
    • Or finish 7th and lose the first game to set up with the Pistons. One they have less playoff experience than the Knicks or Celtics and two cuz fug em that's why
    • This damn play is shown as one of the worst sports plays of the year on a Canadian sports channel on repeat. The reminder on a weekly basis keeps me from being too happy with our playoff appearance.
