Clowney released

Recommended Posts

I try to keep up and project the roster with color-coded charts.  You can see priorities and gauge who has the best chance of making the roster--you can see the priorities as well.  Here, Yellow is a 2025 draft pick, green is an undrafted free agent, and orange is a free agent. The depth chart will obviously change and I am not sure about roles (positions in all cases), so that is not the real issue at this time, but yellows and oranges show how the team focused on which aspects of the defense:

In the front 5, there were 3 draft picks, 3 free agents (not including players we re-signed), and two undrafted players signed.

In the back 6, there was 1 draft pick and 2 free agents (LB, S), and four undrafted free agents.

The undrafted free agents are always long shots, but by identifying them, you can tell which longshots might make the roster.

You need to play these young guys as much as possible.

Hard to replace production like this (sarcasm):

No kidding on the play the young guys. We have 0 chance to win it all and maybe a 10-20% chance at a first round playoff exit. Clowney isn’t a difference maker so let the young guys learn how to play in the NFL.

Yeah might as well give the young investments a clear path.  Depending on how things develop, we're setting ourselves up to be in a very solid spot for 2026.

No need with Dowdle and Etienne behind Hubbard.

lol that's two responses like this, but like I've now said a couple times, I wasn't asking that, I was asking why does putting him on the PUP list "officially end his season" when so many players coming off injuries start camp on the PUP list and are able to come off later.

So not asking why we'd shut him down for the season, I get that, asking the general question of why he wouldn't be able to come off the PUP list later, what makes his PUP listing different than others.

MHS, You are missing Claudin Cherelus is a LB that's in the mix for the 4th spot. He's been here for 2 years and had a couple injuries. I mean he was a wavier claim and been here for evero system, just had bad luck when given a chance. Jon Rhat is the current leader mainly cause of he is the ST ace. But Id say, Cherelus has the same % to make the roster.

CB has the recent wavier claim of MJ Devonshire a 2024 7th rounder. He's got the good-great combine numbers but he's small size. Still he's in the mix for backup duties, in fact all the non-UDFA are wavier claims.

Dam shame about Clowney. I view this as a bad move. I feel clowny is well worth the 7.7, even as a backup. He played hard the whole year without help. I just feel he would have helped more than either DJ Johnson or Barno.

My only cope is he's 32 and at any point his miro-knee could force him to drop off a cliff performance-wise. I wanted to keep him around at least until the trade deadline and if no chance at playoff, flip him for a anything.

NFL is a meat grinder, no love for locals....

Must be the timing of it or something

    • The term you're looking for is "malinger(ed)", and he didn't.  I'm not sure why Panthers fans act like jaded ex girlfriends.  The dude is clearly injury prone as his time in San Fransico also proves. It's not like he got to San Fran and stopped having problems.
    • My long and rambling post:   The guy is all heart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back even better next year. He’s exactly the guy you lock up. The money won’t ever change the way he plays.  It was a big fumble, but what 1,000 yard back fumbles once in an entire season?  Pride. This team is FINALLY seeing guys who obviously take the game very seriously. Hunt, Chuba, Thielen, Brown, Horn (CB), Coker, Bryce (IMHO). Bye bye, Spider-Man. I don’t see these dudes being OK with teammates half-assing practice or in games. I can see Brown and Horn coming over to talk to somebody.  Good team? Ummm, maybe, but will still likely lose more close games than they win unless this last draft turns in to LOB part 2. That’s a stretch.  Pretty good/decent team. Yes. They finished the season as a pretty good team. I know I sound like a broken record harping back to it, but going in to ATL and putting a 40 burger on them en route to an OT win. A bad Panthers team would have had their brakes beaten off. We’ve seen it.  Rose colored glasses on and bonging a 40 of hopium: There are watershed moments that occur that change the course of franchises, both good and bad. If Fox doesn’t pull Rodney at halftime, the epic journey that was 2003 never happens. On the negative side, Cam taking that one hit from Watt was the end of any and all Panthers relevancy and we’ve been the biggest losers in all of pro sports as a result. Watershed moments. LOB draft. Vinny goes down and the goat is born.  Will the ATL game be the spark that this franchise has desperately needed? Could it be that they hit the mega million jackpot with Princley and Scourton as eat QBs for breakfast? Sure would be nice having 2 all-pro edge guys on the cheap for the next 4 years.  A lot of unknowns, but at least it actually feels  fun again.
    • Ok LT and Petersen are a cut above everyone else to me cmc and Faulk are interchangeable on this list.  though Faulk was better career wise
