Not rehashing the Bryce convo, but looking to see who our potential targets could be going into next year, and how viable they may be. Most QBs in the league are below, with more attention to those that could be cut, traded, etc., and seeing who we can talk ourselves into. Will Dave think he can fix damaged goods? Are any of these guys even worth the hassle? The way that I see it...

Untouchables, Not Happening

  • Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, Herbert, Burrow, Maye, Hurts, Baker (Division rival, not happening)

He's Finishing His Career Here

  • Matt Stafford - Sigh. What could've been if that trade would've gone through
  • Aaron Rodgers - Please...just finish your career already.

We'll Listen to the Call, but Not Happening

  • Dak - Contract is crazy, Jerry Jones is crazy, so who knows? Another embarrassing end to the season and lack of playoffs could make Jurruh do something crazy, but not this crazy
  • Jordan Love -  A sneaky one if things magically went south with LaFleur if his inconsistent play continued, but GB would be dumb to even consider
  • Jared Goff - He fits perfectly with the Lions, why would they?
  • Sam Darnold - See above. The way he's playing for the Seahawks and just being signed? Nope.
  • Cam Ward - No chance they give up this soon...but could see how his honesty in the media has rubbed many the wrong way in Tennessee. New coach incoming, FO is a mess, ownership is a mess...crazier things have happened.

Young Guys With Promise Don't Get Traded

  • Jayden Daniels - The injury sucks, Washington was bound to regress, but he's not being traded
  • CJ Stroud - He's regressed, but the Texans have committed malpractice with his offensive line and running game. He's shown glimpses of greatness, which they're not giving up on for at least another season.
  • Caleb Williams - Hasn't shown as much as the two above him on this list...but still not happening.
  • Bo Nix - Sean Payton loves him, can't see it happening so soon.
  • Jaxson Dart - No chance, rookie, etc.
  • JJ McCarthy/Michael Penix - Penix isn't coming here because Atlanta. But lumped these two together because they've largely shown nothing, but aren't getting moved, and no where else to put them.

Maybe...But the Contract Is Tricky

  • Trevor Lawrence - New HC may not love him, his up and down play and lack of living up to the hype? Sounds like a Dave Canales reclamation project to me. Cap hits aren't awful for the next couple of years before they balloon...but the dead cap means he's Jacksonville's for a bit.
  • Kyler Murray - The favorite in the clubhouse to pop-up in trade rumors after being effectively benched in Arizona. The contract has a few years left at $40-50+, and he's not worth it...but somebody will talk themselves into it.
  • Brock Purdy - His highs have been higher than some of the "lesser" QB's in other categories, but it's San Fran and Shanahan can get me to play QB. Just signed the contract though, so they may have buyers remorse, but he's not being moved.

Daniel Jones

  • Can't see him leaving Indy, he's going to get "paid"...but we did have interest in him last year I believe. From Charlotte...but do we trust Daniel Jones to continue on this path, or turn back into a pumpkin. Depends on the rest of the season.

The Starters Who Suck

  • Jacoby Brissett - Starter in Arizona now...but will it stay? NC State ties, but he's from Florida. Could see him being a target to upgrade Dalton next year via trade, or the Cards cut him and save some cash in which case we pounce.
  • Tua Tagovailoa - Miami would eat an ungodly amount of dead cap, and the new team would inherit an awful contract that balloons to $65 mil in 2028. With a new coach likely, I'm sure they could try to move him. But...gross.
  • Geno Smith - Canales connection, Las Vegas hasn't been good for him, contract is easy enough to move? Ehhhh.
  • Mac Jones - Back-up thrust into the starting job, but how much is Shanahan? I'm sure most of it. Could improve our backup spot over Andy, though.
  • Justin Fields - Wing-T up in this bitch.

Some Experience, Damaged Goods, Some Actual Free Agents

  • Spencer Rattler - New Orleans isn't trading him here, makes little sense to cut him. But, they'll be in cap hell as usual, and could be drafting another to go with Shough. Rattler could be the odd man out.
  • Carson Wentz - Could be had for cheap, but he's maybe slightly better than Andy Dalton at this point? Please no.
  • Jake Browning, Joe Flacco, and anyone that's played QB for the Browns and/or Bengals this year - - No thank you. Even if Flacco could sling it one more year.
  • Russell Wilson - Please No
  • Marcus Mariota - Would make some sense, but blah
  • A lot of back-up level guys that nobody would be excited about that I'm not listing because I'm tired of typing.

SO...in conclusion...

  • Traded upgrades to Bryce that have *any* chance of happening while ignoring contracts for a second - Geno Smith, Kyler Murray, Trevor Lawrence.
  • Crazy Darkhorses based on nothing other than my brain and won't happen - Jordan Love, Cam Ward
  • Free Agent Option that will get overpaid and could turn back into a pumpkin - Daniel Jones

I think Bryce is staying, we draft a mid-round guy, and bring in a Jacoby Brissett Marcus Mariota type to round out the room. The entire above exercise is pointless, but also wanted to lay everything out and see if anyone can convince me of someone we could go after, or if we're doomed to hopefully getting lucky in the draft.

Exactly!

I think i trust Dan. Needed to fix oline hes done pretty good job there depth and all. Needed to fix the worst defense in the league they've made massive strides this year.

If or when he decides to upgrade the QB position I think hes got an eye for talent or is smart enough to listen to the right people

Derek Carr coming out of his 1-year retirement is my Darkhorse candidate.

Although I feel like a move for a QB worth anything is highly unlikely as Bryce is well liked and viewed as the teams unquestioned starter by his teammates.

We will probably see Mike White resigned and another JAG veteran backup brought in the replace Andy Dalton.

AR15 is if Justin Fields was fragile and his teammates hated him. No thanks.

Ya'll think you hate watching Bryce Young? Wait until your QB can't even complete a 7 yard pass over the middle, which Fields and Richardson can't do.

If the draft class was better, I could absolutely see the Titans moving on from Ward already if they got the #1 pick. But so far the college QB's haven't impressed enough. They'll have flashes, but then follow it up with a very meh game.

Kyler is already done in Arizona, but he has a ridiculous contract and he's basically Bryce that likes to scramble, so no thanks.

If Lawrence can't produce with that team in Jacksonville, what do you think he'll do here? He's tall Bryce who can throw deep but can't make the 4th down throws and crumbles in the red zone. No thanks.

I do think Canales wants to move on from Bryce, his body language says so even in wins. He treated Bryce pretty odd this week and Bryce looked checked out in the Packers game. But unless they make another risky trade, its going to be slim pickings. Basically our hopes lie in hitting early in the draft with a Mateer, Nussmeier, Beck type or finding a random backup free agent that has another gear to hit.

I think even with the draft being wishy washy, 4-5 QB's will be taken in the top 7. A lot of teams are just that desperate.

    • Dan tends to attack one specific position group per offseason and the sprinkle others throughout the roster. He extended Moton, signed Hunt, Lewis, Nijman one offseason and then extended Brown and signed Wharton and Hunt and drafted Jackson next offseason. My guess is he attacks LB and Edge this offseason.    1. What do you do with Icky? Likely a scratch for next season and due a massive contract (if healthy) They will bring back Nijman and Christensen and draft a guy on Day 2 is my guess and hope one of them can fill the hole. 2. Coker has the talent for 2nd WR, but do you pay a guy who gets hurt that premium? I think hes your number 3 simply due to risk. Will the Panthers seek another vet or go surprisingly high in the draft? They will probably sign him more and longer than the RFA Tender to keep him happy and not break the bank in the process. Can see them getting a Vet in FA like Tutu Atwell or Hollywood Brown. Somebody with speed but also isn’t overly expensive. I think Horn and Tremayne stick around and unfortunately Legette. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tremble released and a real TE in brought in, there is a good FA group this year. 3. Do you give X more feature time? Or cut bait now? I wouldn’t be surprised if they traded him but I’m willing to bet he gets one more year. Maybe Canales can find a role like Shenault had with McAdoo.  4. Planning the long term/short term on OL Like I said I think Christensen and Nijman are brought back for T with a Day 2 rookie and prayer something sticks. Moton, Hunt, Lewis return ofcourse. Probably resign Corbett as a safeguard at Center but I think they go C in the 1st or 2nd. Wouldn’t be shocked to see Morgan trade to the back end of the 1st to get a solid C and add picks. 5. How do you address LB? I think Rozeboom leaves. Hoping CJ Allen or Sonny Styles is still there is too big of a risk. They probably go get Kaden Elliss or Leo Chenal and pay good money for them. Maybe a guy on Day 3 for depth with Cherelus and Martin-Scott. Also think he takes a swing at Edge, wouldn’t be shocked to see Hendrickson or Oweh here.  6. Do you bank of Chuba bouncing back?    I think Chuba remains Chuba. There are some decent change of pace backs out there this year that will be cheap. Still developing Etienne and Brooks may be healthy. I think it’s Chuba and that crew maybe a veteran that’s not Dowdle. More like Deejay Dallas who was here already once.  I also think Dalton calls it and they get an upgrade at back up. Nobody that would endanger Bryce’s job but somebody that isn’t 55 years old either. Trubisky, Minshew, Pickett, Kyle Allen (yes same one).
    • This is my answer. If I got board I would just do guest drop ins to obscure podcasts but would definitely collect the cash from Tepper.
