I think this is a textbook example of letting an announcer reshape what actually happened.  Ball was late, which allowed the defender the opportunity to to break on the pass to Robby.    Sam needed to put some real mustard on that one since it was late. 

What is more common the year? Sam making a textbook late throw or DJ loafing it? 

 

The ball was at worst a half-tick late. It really wasn't late. He's got to let DJ clear Anderson's route before the ball comes out. And the throw was in a good spot. 

Anyone calling this a hospital ball is a fuging moron, really that simple.

No, it absolutely was not. It was great route recognition by the safety.  If you stop the frame just as the ball hits Robby's hands, he's at the 24 running across the field and Harris is at the 20 YARD LINE running up field.  Dude closed in those 4 yards like being shot out of a cannon and the hit was coming regardless, but ball placement on the pass had nothing to do with how Robby got rocked.  Even if the ball was more in front of Robby, Harris already had the hit squared up in his cross-hairs.

It wasn't.  We have evidence of several of the same throws by Cam and every other QB in the league. 

Back in the 80s Jerry Rice said it's up to the receiver to protect himself. 

"When going across the middle in zone the reciever needs to sit down or you are going to run into someone waiting for you."

as for this particular one being a hospital ball...he's thrown some for sure, but this wasn't one of them. like has been said, some of it is on DJ for not completely doing his job which was supposed to at least distract the safety from Robby. the rest is on the safety. it was an ugly hit but it was also a good play that if he were one of our guys i would be applauding it. 

i'm just honestly shocked that robby held on to the ball. shows that he can.

He didn't.

As most commentators with football experience have said it was a good play by the defensive player.

Sam could of made a better throw and got it out earlier.  That would have kept the DJ's defender from breaking off his coverage assignment in the manner he did. 

Overall, most credit IMO has to go to the defender.  It was a great play by him.  And that happens sometimes.

Moore didn't run his route. Sadly Darnold isn't good enough to recognise that Moore wasn't doing his job in the split second he has to make the decision to throw that - only the Rodgers / Mannings / Bradys / Brees of the world are that good. Everyone else needs their teammates to turn up.

      Yes, he's a tier above them, but you also touched on the money side of it.  With T-Mac locked in as our #1 on a rookie contract for a few more years, I'd much rather use that money that would be needed for DJ on our defense and develop Coker into our #2.   Especially given his contract situation as an UDFA, as his contract is up at the end of this year but we can keep him around for a 3rd team controlled year on the real cheap.  Which means we probably could get him to sign a very reasonable extension this offseason to give him a little more money while giving us a bargain contract for what he provides. DJ's contract is north of $20 million for the next 5 years, why pay that for your #2 WR with the needs we have on defense and you have guys like Coker, XL, and Horn on rookie contracts who very well could combine to be a serviceable 2-4 WRs behind a stud in T-mac? I love DJ and he'd be a great fit on this team as our #2, but the money side of it just makes absolutely zero sense, that's all it comes down to for me on this one. And no, I don't see the Bears wanting XL back in that trade, because they drafted Burden, who is essentially a better version of what XL provides, a player you want to get the ball into their hands and let them go to work.

      I didnt see that many bad calls in the panthers cowboys game, but the chiefs especially in the playoffs were getting every single call they could get then the refs when it didnt matter would throw a call towards the other teams.  That I believe was the taylor swift effect.   But its crazy just thinking about how easy it is to change a game.  You dont need but a single ref to make a few close calls go towards one team over the other and in the nfl that is the game.

      I don't think it's unrealistically blaming Bryce Young......to say has been a reason, sometimes a big one, in why our pass offense overall has been extremely week over the past 3 collective seasons.  I think that bothering anyone, is just being overly invested in some Bryce Young argument.  It's just a reality.
