I won’t go as far as to call Kiper a clown, but that has certainly entered my mind about him before. He said Jim Drunkenmiller was the best QB of his class, that Steve Emtman was a can’t miss and that Tony Mandarich was the best OL ever.

He’s most famous for being absolutely right that Trev Alberts would be an absolute bust, but he wanted Trent Dilfer taken in that spot. He writes a million mock drafts per year and constantly contradicts himself, regardless of the teams’ needs.

The fact that ESPN has been paying him (and paying him well) for over 30 years is just short of astounding.

He just loved Clausen too

Exactly. It’s been awhile since Mel’s official announcement way back in 2010. If your memory needs to be jogged a bit, he did it while debating ESPN foil Todd McShay on “NFL Live” leading up to that year’s draft.

The topic? The NFL future of then-Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen.

Kiper had Clausen ranked as the fourth best prospect in the entire 2010 NFL Draft even though most other draft pundits had the QB projected to go in the second round (Clausen was subsequently selected 48th overall by the Carolina Panthers). At the time, people accused Kiper of being biased since he and Clausen shared the same agent, Gary Wichard.

But Kiper only dug in his heels further, making this infamous proclamation on ESPN:

“If Jimmy Clausen is not a successful quarterback in the NFL, I’m done. That’s it. I’m out.”

Replied McShay: “What is your time frame, Mel? When do we make that assessment?”

Kiper: “I want eight years.”

McShay: “It will only take three years, Mel. We can tell inside three years.”

Kiper: “I want eight.”

Well, Kiper got his eight years and here we finally are in 2022 — over 10 years after Clausen’s final NFL game. As for whether his career was a “success,” the stats speak for themselves:

Mel Kipper doesn't know poo. Panthers could take a DE but it won't be because Mel knows it.

If they sign a QB and a LT, or if 4 Tackles go before they pick at #6--then they MIGHT take a DE.  Kiper is a fraud and has been for years.  He is always totally wrong but they bring him back.

He's extremely controversial and when he opens his mouth people still listen, even in disbelief.  Sometimes guys like this make people tune in even if he is wrong.  I think bringing Todd McShay to counter him makes keeping him on the staff that much more interesting.  He smart and knows a lot about these players and makes some good points.   His Mocks are terrible an usually he only gets the first pick right.

I wish I had his gig.  Work 30 years and be wrong most of the time and still get PAID.

As in "Who in the hell is Mel Killer Jr"?

A load of people still remember that moment years later.

Kipper is wrong on every single pick.

    • Why do we always let our good players go ?   CMC was injured and we let him go . Now we face him Monday night .  We know what Chuba can do . We know what Rico can do .  We signed Chuba so why not sign Rico .   we don't know what we have in Brooks ,  Let him and Eteine go at it in camp . Keep the better player .  Don't let your proven players leave .
    • Oh, I get it. I called him Peewee for the first couple of years. He is too small to be an NFL QB. It wasn't as much of a problem in college, even in the SEC, because every player in the NFL is the size and speed of the biggest 22 on your entire college team.  I was left scratching my head over the pick and what we traded to get him (and yes, that cost analysis is unavoidable). Now we're sunk into the third season and the kid just popped a frikkin' amazing game out there where he showed every mark of what you need in a top end QB. Great passing, mobility, guts, toughness (that ankle must have been killing him) and the ability to put a team on his back to claw back a win. He didn't win it with his arm so much as by getting the ball to the right people at the right time, but that is what the best do. Do I believe he's going to be our QB of the future here? I'm still out on that. Way out on that. But I'm at least intrigued. Can he replicate what he did or even get close? Can he perform well against the power opponents we have left on the schedule? Heck, can he even beat New Orleans this season?  Right now, my personal feeling is that he'd make a heck of a back-up QB. He could prove me wrong and excel, though. Maddening as it is, that'd be the best outcome ever. Or he could have just hit his peak. And that would be bittersweet because then we start the whole thing over again. I don't see a reclaimation project QB out there right now that Canales can work his magic on.
