Sean Payton’s Panthers interview is on hold

If the goal is to actually hire Payton the delay may be to allow Payton to get the saints to come down on trade costs for Panthers vs. other teams.  Payton and the saints clearly are not on the same page regarding compensation.  No reason to interview if cost is 2 firsts.  But more likely it is a result of multiple factors including the tragedy and the training issue and others not reported.

Personally, I don't think Payton wants to coach the Panthers (#feelingismutual) and is just using Panthers to increase bargaining/offers and Panthers are using situation to increase attractiveness of their HC position.

Giving that up the Panthers 2023 # 9 draft pick and heavens knows what else to get Sean Payton would be a massive gamble in my opinion, especially considering the need to draft a high-upside QB from the college ranks.

Again, this all comes down to David Tepper. If he’s 100 percent convinced Payton can lead the Panthers back to prominence, then parting ways with first-round picks this year or next will be worth the risk.

Giving a divisional rival valuable draft resources isn’t ideal. But as we’ve seen countless times throughout Tepper’s ownership, he may act on impulse and not think twice.

Things worked out great when we rushed a hiring last time.

The issue being pointed out is the media, not the hiring process. Also length of time doesn't fix stupid. Rhule was hired cause the owner didn't know what he was doing and he may not still.

Your impatience is not going to change media practices. Idk man if it bothers you that much just don't pay attention.

Just don't buy it. If this was the case they would reschedule to a zoom meeting. The fact that both parties were prepared to travel, Payton specifically across the country means there is interest.  Tepper did call Payton months ago as well. Payton knows Carolina can be a dope spot. We owned the division for 3 straight years while he was at NO.  Payton also knows much of our roster inside and out. He knows that Carolina has the best potential of all the teams he has interviewed with.  Even if we part with more draft capital then Denver we have a ton of cap space after this season. Payton can hand pick a veteran QB.

In Denver all of his hopes rest on Russell Wilson. If Wilson craps the bed this year the Broncos will be rebuilding for half a decade. The Broncos would actually be best served the cut Wilson right now because the dead money would be spread out over two years.  If they cut Wilson after the season that horrendous dead money hit will be spread over 3 years and they will have to dismantle the team.

I find it hard to believe that Payton would put is legacy in the hands of Russel Wilson.

We are foundationally ahead of the competition and Payton has to know this.   He also holds all the power in negotiations. The Saints can send smoke signals and gaslight all they want but the reality is Payton will decide where he wants to go.  The worst thing that can happen to the Saints is Payton goes back to Fox.  The assets the Saints could get after two years would be in line with maybe a 3rd round pick.  If Payton says to the Saints " You are trading me to the Panthers for a future first."  The Saints would bitch and moan but have to oblige or they would get nothing this year and dramatically less next year.

As long as it's not us I'm happy. I hope it's the Broncos so we all get to watch that pooshow hit the next level.

I doubt it will be a poo show, look at NO when they hired Payton, Aaron Brooks was there QB , and they were the NFC south whipping boy , even we dunked on them , they were a poo show if I ever seen one, but they they got this QB the chargers gave up on, and the rest is history

If there is anyone who can fix Denver and Russel, it's Sean Payton

But he was never going to pick us anyway, we are going to have to hope we get another Sean McDermont, and no there is nothing Tepper could offer him to get him to leave Buffallo

Maybe or maybe not. Wilson looks awful and like his head grew a couple of sizes with his new contract. His contract is fully guaranteed so expecting him to go back into prove it mode is a tough sell for me.

Payton could bust just like anyone we hire. No one is guaranteed to work out because until they try we just don't know. What is known is that no SB winning coach has won another SB with another team in the modern NFL. We have also seen a good HC come here and fail. Lots of posters just assume he will be great when hired, I think it's not at all likely and that his best days are behind him. What made him so good in NO to turn it around was hunger that comes with someone who has to prove it and he was leading the NFL in strategy and innovation on and off the field which stagnated his last few years in NO.

So yeah if they go all in on a SB run and he doesn't go back to 2009 Payton then it's entirely possible it turns into an expensive pooshow. The fact someone is going to pay him $20 million a year, give full roster control and expect results immediately is going to ramp up the possibility. Worst case on Payton looking good is Houston with the #2 pick but the last QB he drafted that he liked was Hill lol. IDK, I want to see him fail but I also think he will.

    • I have deep concern that the answer might be both. Reich did a terrible job of catering to Bryce while Bryce just flat out didn't look like he had starting NFL talent.
    • Here is one explanation of Bryce--He has never been the underdog--aways played with a lead, always had the best team, best OL, and usually, the best WRs.   Since high school. Now imagine a bully who punches you in the arm every time he walks by you.  At first, you walk by with confidence and it catches you off guard.  Then you start flinching and taking side steps to avoid the hit.  He still hits you.  This happens for an entire year.  Now think of what you would do if you walked by him and he didn't hit you.  You would still dodge, duck, dip, and dodge, and people would look at you like you were an idiot.  Point: even when Bryce had a clean pocket, he was not confident and he prepared to be hit.  This guy talks about him being out of rhythm etc.  Then he still blames Bryce when he demonstrates that there was no separation and the routes were predictable.  In addition to that,  he mentions that Bryce often had LESS than 2 seconds to throw before getting pressure.  So the Defense knows you have to throw because you are behind--they know what play you are going to run--since they can cover you in man they can rush 7, play man under with cover 1 or 2 support over the top---vs. your 5 OL and a RB who can't block.  Our TEs were not open.  Bozeman decided to suck hard, and we had 9 different players start at both G spots.  Campen sucked, folks--was saying it all year.  So Bryce flenched on the rare occasion that he was protected for more that 2 seconds.  What does flinching look like?  Feet out of position (Cam had the same issue--the brain tells the feet to run), timing off (second guessing due to previous forced errors) etc. Bryce needs to go back to feeling confident in the pocket.  I hope he is not traumatized by 2023.  He has to be second guessing his ability--like you are.  Self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Agree, it mattered last year and we got a superstar. We should get a very very good starter this year as well.
