Good question. No way to know. It's entirely possible that keeping Burns here was part of getting Evero. It's also possible it had nothing to do with it. Evero's defense in Denver was pretty good without a dominant pass rusher.

Thank you for making sure to mention this early in the thread.

We regularly see folks apoplectic when discussing the later years of a player's new deal without taking into consideration the regular increases to the salary cap.

Can't wait for Burns to be locked down contractually for the next 3 - 5!! 😄

My answer is, pay the man now because he'll never be as cheap as he is right now.

Yeah no more needs to be said. 12.5 sacks out of position (4-3 instead of 3-4) with Rhule coaching half of the season. In theory 12.5 should be his floor with a better staff in the 3-4 where he fits more naturally. Pay the man and try to find a good player to lock down the other edge.

Pay the man. He’s gotten noticeably better pretty much every year. Started out poor against the run, now he’s decidedly NOT a liability against the run. Better than average. His sack numbers (since that’s all some care about) have increased and will only increase with better coaching and scheme. He’s reliable and a leader of the defense.

Him dropping 12.5 sacks last year clearly didn’t impress anyone but he did this in his age 24 season. Not only has he already improved but it’s very reasonable for him to develop throughout his first contract due to him coming into the league so young. Burns floor is currently 12.5 sacks, his ceiling is a 15+ sack guy, you pay those guys the bag. Especially given his trajectory of finally going into a proper 3-4 defense, not Riveras fraud 3-4. Burns in the correct role will prove to be even scarier using his elite burst and bend to terrorize QBS and playing a 3-4 LB will allow him to play to his more natural role in run defense allowing him to be a complete player on the defense.

I hope this is what happens.

The other point to keep in mind is that we have tons of cap room and a rookie qb which will set us up nicely capwise for the next 4 years at least. If you're not going to spend the extra money on your best players who also happen to play the most premium positions, what's the point?

Burns is what he is by now. 4 years into the league is a lifetime. Good a rushing the passer. Ok and stopping the run. No more. No less. He isn’t going to get better. If they are ok paying for a pass rusher then great but let’s not act like he is the 2nd coming of Peppers. Pay him what you think he is worth and keep finding pieces around him.

The number over true elite defensive ends have steady dwindled over the last 2 decades. 

I really don't care about the consistent underrated that Burns seems to get here. 

He is a pass rushing specialist,  and is quite good at he. He's going to get paid. Period. That's how the NFL works. Simple laws of supply versus demands. 

This is also why I don't get hung up on contracts, because they are all overpaid.

    • 1st period was a Masterclass on defense by both teams. About time for the Canes let’s keep it up.
    • Yes, it tells me they’ve improved significantly from sitting at what, 30-31st in the league on the PP to 11th now.
    • I wanted someone to hire him so we got the picks, but I'm also not upset that he'll now be back. I genuinely don't understand why so many fans on here dislike him so much.  No, he's not perfect and made some mistakes this year, especially at the end of the playoff game and going so soft in coverage on the final drive. But considering this place torched him all offseason for us having the "worst defense in NFL history" last year.  Said in the whole pre-draft process how we had to go defense in round 1 because of it and then complained the rest of the offseason that we didn't do enough to improve the defensive roster. How do people say all that about the defense and then complain when he turned that same unit into a pretty respectable defense this year.  They were really the only reason we were in a lot of games for most of the season, as the middle part of the season they really stepped up and were playing like one of the better defenses in the league. I don't see any reason we can't improve even more next year if we spend another offseason focusing on adding pieces on that side of the ball, which we should be able to do with our draft picks and cap space. We had the historically worst defense ever last year and people are upset because we weren't the 85 Bears this year, make it make sense.
