Why Panthers tight end Tommy Tremble is enjoying clean slate with new coaching staff

In this period of optimistic offseason puff pieces, I enjoyed this timely catch-up with Tommy Tremble from Mike Kaye.

“This is really the first time that we’ve really been coached up, receiving-wise, other than us trying to figure it out on our own,” Tremble said in a phone interview with The Observer on Tuesday. “This is really the first opportunity we’ve had to excel in the receiving game, and have points, and (receive) teaching points on how to attack this kind of leverage, attack this kind of defense. . . . Before it was more, you run it, you run what’s on paper and you try to make it work, and if it didn’t work, you’d try to figure it out yourself.

“So, having that kind of backing, that kind of support — from all over the coaching staff to the players, themselves — I think it’s been a world of difference in what our accelerating (of) the receiving game has been.”

The Panthers’ offense didn’t lean heavily on the tight end position in the receiving game during Rhule’s tenure, and Tremble’s early output reflects that lack of emphasis. Even after former interim head coach Steve Wilks took over in Week 6 of last season, offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo rarely made Tremble and the position group his focus in the passing attack.

Tremble says that outlook has changed under Reich, who is known for his creativity with the tight end position.

“I would say it’s something very harped on for this year, and I love every second of it,” Tremble said.

While the squad signed veteran tight end Hayden Hurst to upgrade and lead the group, the team chose not to address the position in the draft.

“I think it shows that Frank trusts us,” Tremble said about the limited the roster movement at tight end. “He’s seen our group in the offseason, he’s seen us in the beginning of OTAs — he saw how our group worked together, and I really think he trusts our ability. Throughout practice, we’ve been really able to show that we can produce and produce a lot. And it’s the most excited I’ve been in my entire life for a football season. We’re just itching to get on the field.”

“I really feel, with this coaching staff, we’re on a great trajectory,” Tremble said. “I mean everything we’ve done is understandable, it makes sense — it makes sense why we do this, why we do that — it’s just really coming together, and I think the team, as a whole, can feel it.”

it's easy to focus on Tremble's comments about this year vs last year, and god knows there's a lot of material to mine there. but I'm just appreciative that he feels equipped to develop his game under Reich/Brown/Lilly. he definitely has the physical tools to succeed, and now he's hopefully getting the coaching he needs to take his game to the next level.

Usually don’t read too much into stuff like this but I do think that first quote is pretty telling.

Good grief, the comments the players make about the previous staff just shows how truly out of depth Rhule and co. were.

That’s absolutely crazy that they didn’t teach the tight ends how to convert routes based on leverage, something that’s pretty standard in the NFL. No wonder we looked like a clown show for 3 years. If they didn’t do something as simple as that, just imagine what else the coaching staff didn’t do.

There's the player's side and the coach's side, woth the reality typically somewhere in the middle, but I can definitely believe that Rhule and many of his staff were poor teachers of what they did teach. Those guys were outclassed weekly by real NFL minds and even just moving to Wilks brought immediate and noticeable improvements.

Tremble was never a good route runner or catcher he was supposed to develop that.. got with the worst staff to do so and now he's at a crossroads I don't buy into too much of what these guys say about the previous coaching staff because when they were  here it was all love lol

Thats how they are taught to conduct themselves, you are not supposed to throw your coaching or teammates under the bus. 

We all know Rhule was a fuging clown faced doofus, this is just more confirmation.

I agree.  Pretty obvious Rhule and company sucked but so did Tremble. Time to put up or force us to use a high pick on TE because this part is totaly b.s.:

Tremble's first two years in the league are somehow better than Hurst's first two...maybe even, but whatever, not much difference.

1:  That is amazing, considering the coaching staff and QB play during that time.

2:  It's why I'm NEVER ok with drafting TE high....ever.  Just take too long to pan out.

Yikes. But based on our TE production (or rather lack there of) under Rhule what he's saying certainly makes sense.

I really hope it turns out that we have significantly more talent on this roster than we thought simply simply through competent coaching.
