That's what the point of preseason is, and what determines that are the goals that are set by the coaches.

Harbaugh, just like you are trying to do in this thread, is really using a straw man. No one here is saying that preseason doesn't matter, and I personally have never seen a reporter write that preseason doesn't matter. Everyone knows it matters, but wins and losses in preseason are largely not the measure of "success" during the regular season. 

Everyone knows that preseason games matter to the guys who are actually trying to develop and prove that they deserve to be in the NFL. 

And none of us who have been critical of these preseason performances really care that they lost the games. It's that they looked like garbage doing so, especially our offensive line.

Dude I don’t go around pooing posts a lot but you literally made 2 threads to whine about this. In the other thread you pointed out the defense specifically getting its ass kicked. A defense that didn’t dress its 2 best starters plus a third. How can you possibly come to any conclusion about that? I bet before yesterday you thought McCall was our starting nose, too, just like everyone else. If that doesn’t tell you you don’t know wtf is going on in the preseason then idk what does. Take a look at the defensive scheme. You think Evero’s defense, which is designed around scheming rushers to the QB and often uses just 2 down linemen for example, is going to be a defense that looks great in vanilla preseason games? This defense without game planning will look worse than a 4-3 without game planning.

your preseason record doesn't matter. 

and i don't care what harbaugh says. that might be his goal, but for most teams preseason is for evaluation.

if going undefeated in preseason is important to you, then you're going to have an easy time of it because you're playing against teams who don't have it as their primary objective.

but when you get to the end of preseason...what happens to that record?

The outcome of preseason games doesn't matter but the execution and effort during the game certainly does matter. From the 1st and 2nd string players I wanna see them be able to execute what is called and from the 3rd and 4th string players I can be ok with sloppy execution I just wanna see effort and hustle because you're playing for your job and future in the league.
