Interesting take 🤔

I'd still want the threat of a deep ball at least, but receiver YAC is part of a typical WCO anyway.

I mean how many times a game can you say, everyone go deep?  You cannot run your receivers into the ground over a 17 game season and expect them to last.  Besides, there's only so many Jefferson level players available to choose from.

You've got to get some guys that can do the dirty work and play the middle of the field and understand the chess board they way your qb does. That means you need a couple of smart, crisp routes, sure handed guys that can get some yac. You have a better chance at finding a few of those guys than a bunch of deep threats to send deep every play.

It's a debate that pervaded the 2023 NFL draft as teams evaluated first-round quarterbacks and carefully considered the offensive identity each pick could bring and what level of success it could have in an ever-evolving league.

"Do you want Anthony Richardson, the big play superstar, massive arm? Or do you want C.J. Stroud who's the 'death by a thousand paper cuts' guy? People were torn," Orlovsky said. "Now obviously the ideal world, you want both. But it's interesting to see what style of quarterback you prefer with what kind of style of offense your team may want to run."

Hmmm... ineresting...

I've been noticing this for a while.  It's why QB's like Young can actually make a good living, and not die in the process.

You don't have to be 6'5" 240 any longer, you just have to be able to get the ball out on time, and accurately.  Smith with the Eagles wouldn't last 5 games 10 years ago...now, he can thrive.

Steve Smith would absolutely dominate in this era of passing game.

He dominated in his era and would dominate in any era. One of the most underrated WRs ever. Put up the 8th most career receiving yards (and probably could've gotten to top 3 if he wanted to keep playing) and that was despite mostly having pretty bad QB play and always playing in a run first offense focused more on D and ball control to win games. It's a joke that he wasn't first ballot HoF

Defenses are built to rush the passer up front, and prevent the long bomb deep.  They know the rules are skewed in favor of offenses, so the only hope defenses have against elite offenses is to try to force more challenging situations in the red zone.  That means they're effectively allowing short yardage passing.  Combine that with the speed most defenses have up front and you are left with offenses basically taking what the defense will give them.

    • I hear you but they are coaching to win the game. You start unnecessarily taking risks you introduce a few bad outcome possibilities.  His ball security is poor, to start with. And we had Nijman at ROT. A strip sack, an int, just a simple loss of the down due to a missed connection,  could change the outcome. You don’t fug with maybe throwing the game away just to practice stuff.  It’s coming. It has to be coming. That box will be stacked with players who can win the down, soon enough. Then I hope we see some of what you are asking for.
    • If you look at every QBs chart on the NextGen stats page, you will see Young pretty much threw more passes past the 10 yard line than any of the other QB's this week and he completed a higher percentage of them this week as well. The same goes for last week. He doesn't have the both weeks but he is in the top 5 both weeks. I don't know why everyone keeps griping about this subject. The charts show it simply isn't true.
    • I get what you're saying.  And don't disagree, but .... It's week 6.  I could see if it's week 13 or 14 and we're eliminated from the playoffs. By not watching, you missed a pretty epic game and finish.  The fun me and about 40 other Panther fans had at the bar far outweighs the frustration I have with the front office. And not trying to win for a higher draft pick isn't applicable to this staff.  They've proven whether we pick 1st or 31st they will most likely mess it up.  I also haven't seen any QB in college that is a no-miss pick this year. This post, and my positive spirit expires in 7 days when we lose at the Jets.  Haha.
