This is all about leverage, nothing more.

Possibility 1:  OF COURSE if you're the Panthers you say all the right things about wanting a long term deal.  That's the only way to maintain his value if you actually want to trade him.  If you say to the league "No, we just want to trade him" his value instantly plummets.

Possibility 2:  If you really do want to sign him, but you also want it to be a more friendly deal, you non-exclusive him.  Which we did.  This allows him to go talk to other teams and find out what THEY might pay him.

No matter what happens, this is the right move.

I agree Burns has had underwhelming moments and if you go back and read the posts I've been critical of him often last season.

But that's my point. People have basically made up their minds  that at 25 years old in a dysfunctional organization that has the worst win percentage in all of professional sports the last few years that the lows are who he is and will always be at 25 years old. None of us can know that.

Eh, I think if it was there it would have shown up at some point. I honesetly can't rmemeber a single remarkable play that Burns has made in his 5 years.

Overall we're on the same page though. At this point all we can do as fans is sit and watch this unfold, even though it should have been resolved years ago.

there seems to be legitmate smoke to the rumor that he's getting traded, not only is it widely speculated but Jonathan Jones (well connected) tweeted today to not be suprised with a trade.

My guess is the Rams, Houston, and Baltimore would all be interested.

I would wager the compensation will be a: 1 and 4 this year and a 2 or 3 next year.

I HIGHLY doubt any team would give up more than that but if there is a bidding war ultimately the Panthers could still wind up with two firsts if someone chooses to sign him to the non-exclusive tag

FWIW I would sit it out and play hardball with Burns. If he was available in this draft he would be a top 5 talent. We aren't going to get the value we should for him. I think we could get a deal done for somewhere around 28 mill per year this offseason. You keep a franchise cornerstone, he gets paid handsomely (that's more than he really should get imo) and we still have somewhat of a pass rush.

If we trade him our pass rush literally drops to nothing

I hope they get those 2 first or he refuses to show up if they can't trade him. Him on a long term deal is worst case scenario...which means it will happen and it will be another hilarious epic fail. I just don't see why anyone would spend 2 1st on Burns. He just isn't worth it.

Honestly I am torn. Not down on Burns as some, I think he still can be a premium pass rusher. No one is will to give up 2 1st round picks for an average DE. However getting back into the 1st round if possible this year is enticing. I am leaning towards getting a deal done ( closer to the teams terms then Burns ) and then working on finding a DE to bookend him with but won't be upset either way. I will say, do not be surprised that be pops off once we trade him.

I don't want to pay him 30 million i agree he does not command that value.

If we can reach a reasonable contract then keep him. If not you do what you have to.

All I'm saying is I've been a fan of this team for 2 decades. I know what is most likely going to happen if we trade him to a contender. It's just a Panthers tradition at this point.

My issue isn't keeping him either. It's where does that number lie. I think one thing that has probably hurt his value as a Panther, at least to me, is we're seeing other guys who play a more complete game than Burns taking contracts for less than what he's reportedly been offered. Maxx Crosby and Montez Sweat come to mind right away.

I think going to another team would be better for him.  He's been on a losing team for the first 5 years of his career.  Burns says he doesn't like change and wants to stay.  It reminds me of people I've worked with that don't like the company they work for, but refuse to look for another job.

I know if it were me, a change of scenery would probably be in order.

I think 5 years, $27m per is fair value, if not a slight overpay. Burns can negotiate with other teams under this tag, so let's see what the rest of the league is willing to pay him...

with the cap increase, that's a very solid deal for both sides.

This tells me that nothing has changed with this team. I do not want to hear Dan Morgan mention the word Dawg again. He's full of poo.

Could this be part of a tag and trade strategy?

How so?

Tagging him provides us with options. Letting him walk on a free is a bad idea - so is extending him to a multi-year contract.
