Isn't that what good coaches are supposed to do? Scheme to strengths and hide weaknesses. Here in Carolina we do it different.

how do you hide a defensive line that cant set the edge, cant stop the run up the middle or create any pressure on the qb?

Darnold is who he is. The current situation reminds me of the Vikings a few year ago when they started a journeyman at QB and made it to the NFC Championship game.
Then that player sucked when he left the team. Same thing with Foles when he left the Eagles.
Darnold is “good” now. But we all know if he wasn’t in this perfect situation he would still be not good.
When Darnold was here we said he needed a perfect team to be good and now he is on one that is perfect for him.

He is still doing Darnold stuff. He is throwing into double coverage, bad mechanics, and panicking with the slightest pressure. He just has a monster WR and a monster defense. He is a good place holder, but you better go get a guy who can make plays when you want to make the jump.

So the Sam Darnold panthers had a strong running game, Dawg mentality, and  DJ Moore. Sam showed some progress (he still had some damnit, Sam plays, but so did our 2 best QBs of all time)… and it was all burned down, for this. It was moldable. But nope. Too conventional.

Right now, I have no idea what the base is because we seem to keep falling through every floor we step on.

I get that but he is now playing better because he's being coached up and they have actually acquired talent instead of trading for projects. We've had how many QBs since Cam's shoulder took a crap and none of then have developed at all. Darnold is never going to be an all pro, but he's doing OK for now and McCarthy is learning in the way a QB should his rookie year, from the bench. Meanwhile we traded for a QB whose only skill so far seems to be tricking a pretend GM out of 30m dollars.

I'm happy for Sam

At first I hated the trade, then I talked myself into it, then I hated it again

But when I matured is when I realized it wasn't Sam's fault. He had Matt Rhule coaching him and then when Wilks took over he looked not bad.

I don't think he'd be the player today without Shannhan and now KOC grooming him though. He needed an actual talented offensive mind.

Honestly this. I feel like our number one off-season need is to get a massive NT and a superstar edge. If we went 1/2 in the draft at DL it wouldn't be a bad strategy.

Sam looked like that with us under Wilks , Tepper let a guy go who excels at getting the best out of players

Wilks isn't coaching in the NFL.

Wilks bread and butter was a strong run game and an opportunistic defense.

Against the Commanders we could not move the ball on a 4th and 1 after investing $150 million in the interior of our OL.

We would still be getting our asses handed to us with Wilks coaching. Please end this automatic cope reflex already.

That's probably true.

Sam seems like a legit good dude but I don't see him ever leading a team that's contends for a SB but hell, I'm kinda rooting for him to prove me wrong just because I know it would chap Tepper's ass and further embarrass him. LOL

Can't deny that. The players seemed to respond to Wlks during that time. Would it have continued? Who knows but we didnt even give it a shot the next season and instead hired someone that was fired half way through the following. Could have been advantageous to have Wilks back for one solid audition seasons as head coach to see what he does or give him a few year deal that Tepp would have fired him from immediately if he stunk it up anyhow. Nothing really to lose there since we hired a head coach next that didnt even seem to care to be here coaching or have any personality or energy what so ever.

    • Just going off the draft sims and he's always sitting around 20 lol. First year in a while where we haven't been thinking about the draft already in late October so haven't really looked into the top 15-20 picks yet. Also the qb class is super weak so he probably will sneak up into 10-15
    • I fully expect them to pick up his 5th year , and they're waiting for him to put a full excellent consistent season of QB play in year 4 or 5. If that don't happen,  they'll eventually cut ties.  Here's to hoping he just goes on a team in 2026. The worst thing he could do is continue to see-saw us to around .500 records because it might be impossible to replace him at that point unless youre willing to do the veteran qb carousel poo we did from 2019 to 2023.
    • What do you think of Bryce Youngs career thus far? Are you excited about his progress or is it not enough for you? I included a poll of ranking his performance through 3 years thus far.  I personally think he's made some decent progress. Has had some high moments (last half of 2024, Rams game, ATL game in 2025)  but in my mind, those are still outweighed by the many more lowlights thus far (ex turnovers, missed throws, poor decisions)  It's a very mixed bag for me. He's done enough to get a 5th year option but by no means should we lock him in with a 50+ mil a year multi year deal. I want to see him play consistently well for a full year before that happens (yes, I'm still saying that going into year 4. That might be telling).  Just sucks when you see CJ Stroud, Jayden Daniel's, Caleb Williams almost immediately lighting poo up with their arm talent. Maybe Bryce is just an ultra slow burn. I don't know what to think anymore. Guess we're gonna be stuck with him for a whilr unless we end up being bad enough to earn a high pick next year. I doubted it lol. Overall Stats for his career:       ● 14 W - 30L (regular season)       ● 0-1 playoffs record        ● 61.4% completion, 8291 passing yards, 49 TDs, 30 INTs  Year 1:       ● 2 wins, 14 losses      ● 60% completion rate, 2877 passing yards, 11 TD to 10 INTs, 5.5 yards per attempted pass Year 2:        ● 4 wins , 8 losses        ● 60.9% completion rate,  2403 passing yards, 15 TD, 9 INTs,  6.3 yards per attempted pass  Year 3:        ● 8 Wins, 8 Losses         ● 63.6% competition rate, 3011 passing yards, 23 TDs to 11 INTs  Playoffs         ● 1 game in year 3 ( 0 - 1 in playoffs)         ● 21/40 (52.5% completion rate), 264 passing yards, 1 TD, 1 INT.
