Our pass blocking has been mediocre since last season, go watch the pats film they got destroyed by the pats interior pass rush. They are lucky Bryce isn’t a statue back there cause we would be leading the league in sacks given up.

Our run blocking is elite though. Icky and Moton are both way better run blockers than pass blockers

We all agree they’re great at run blocking and data shows 3rd in NFL in run block win rate.  But I would really like more balance with pass protection. Only 27th in pass block win rate is disappointing and needs fixing if we want a more balanced attack.image.thumb.png.f3db658b4f7015149ab33858081450bc.png

We're playing backs at key spots s ross half games so far....inconsistent pass pro is gonna be hard to overcome.

Pass blocking is a really hard stat to correlate into real world. There are some parts of it that are incredibly dependent on things well beyond the linemen.

Play calling can affect it, receivers route running, chipping from backs, QB awareness and mobility, strength of play action, adjustment calls at the line. And those are all things we're still working on here.

I also think we are getting closer to the right recipe for our O-line. I think Cade Mays at Center is the right move. BC at guard seems to be working out. And I really need to see Moton back in this line up to see if we are showing overall improvement.

We aren't there yet, obviously, but something is beginning to gel.

Could we splurge on a center in the second round?  Cade Mays at center looks serviceable as a later round pick but, I’m not sure that you can count on that too often…

We’ve had opportunities to take 2 of the top 5 Cs in the game and instead we took TMJ and Johnathan Brooks. Our drafts since 2017 have been 1 player per draft and then huge misses on lots of really good NFL players (who the huddle have talk about in the draft threads).

It’s been mentioned here so many times to draft more OL once you get to the 2nd and beyond since C/G talent is top tier in day 2 and lots of surprise day 3 guys.

Taking Brooks over Frazier just looks worse and worse as our OL helps Chuba and Rico look great and Frazier would be a large improvement over Mays.

You have to invest in the middle via the draft. Its cheap and easy and rounds 2 and 3 are gold for interior linemen. I've been banging this drum since Kalil's neck injury. Draft your anchor in the middle and keep him. The chemistry between center and QB is the most important on the field. Paradis, Bozeman, Corbitt. Good lawd.

The people complaining about our pass protection aren't watching other games. At worse our OL is at least an average pass protecting OL. NFL pass rushers are good. This ain't Alabama where you can hang out behind an OL of future pros protecting against future Amazon warehouse workers.

    • Technically speaking, Fields has been a better QB than Bryce Young in the NFL.  I mean it’s bottom rung comparing by BY isn’t better.  Thats what I don’t get about the talk this week.  We don’t have a QB edge
    • Might be different against a team with no legitimate pass catching options outside of their rookie TE though.  Their #1 WR tomorrow has 8 catches this season, next best WR receptions number this year is 4. If we can't defend that while Horn travels with their TE, then we have some serious problems.   Maybe we don't end up doing that in the end, but it's probably how I'd be scheming up the defense tomorrow when they have only 1 non RB pass catching option.
    • I fought sleep to stay awake just to watch that fumble on the goal line as we were going in for the go ahead score and said fug it, I'm going to bed. I've seen this movie before. I know how this ends. This bullshit of having California teams in conference with east coast teams is trash. That game probably didn't end until 2:30AM. Hell, it was 2AM at the time of the fumble and there was still 3+ minutes to play. In conference games being played into the 2AM hour for local audiences is terrible for the game. And the worst rule in football really does need fixed. Fumbling through the endzone or a fumble recovers by the D in the end zone should not result in a touch back and the ball on the 20. Fumbling through the endzone should not be a turnover. Fumbling out of bounds isn't a turnover anywhere else on the field. That should be the offense's ball on the one yard line. If the D recovers it in the endzone it should be the D's ball on the one yard line. Everyone knows this and everyone talks about it so just fix it already. If Cal was getting the ball at the goal line instead of out to the 20 I would've kept watching. That's a completely different scenario than the ball at the 20.
