The Run D Problem: Scheme, Personnel, or Both??

Our run defense has been horrible going back some time now even as other areas of our defense have improved. This despite spending a top-10 pick on a DT, a 2nd rounder on a DE, and signing a pretty well regarded veteran in Matt Ioannidis.

The question is: is this because we just don't have the players capable of stopping the run or is there a larger schematic issue to blame here? Or could it be both?

What say the Huddle?

The interesting thing is, we did stop them on the drive right before our field goal, when we focused on stopping the run.  So probably a lot of scheme/coaching decisions, but with significant inability to deal with an oline that was missing two starters.

We also had the new DE in on that drive.

It's both scheme and personal. Still a good coach hides personal weaknesses and honestly even where we have focused in the draft(CB, DT, DB) have played underwhelming. I think Matt Rhule has had too much input and not enough qualified people have been used in the draft and FA process.

    • I just dont get the worry over losing a practice squad player that just went undrafted. Everyone just made their selections. The chances of a team wanting to sign him to an active roster after not selecting him is very low.  If that interested they would have taken him late to evaluate in person. As far as I can tell two qbs were signed off another teams practice squad last season and they were both going in to their 5th season.
    • I enjoyed reading this thread and the usual banter that follows. The only silver lining I can identify right now is we do actually have a couple of young QB's behind him and we do have a nice roster on both sides of the ball built around the most important position. So if the team overall shows some promise but we still falter largely due to a lack of consistent passing output (again) hopefully the decision makers can be free to make the best decision for the team going forward after the conclusion of this upcoming season.
    • I don't really follow the team anymore due to a variety of reasons and consequently have largely stopped posting but I agree that this is a lovely website and community. This forum probably kept me around for years longer than I would've stuck otherwise because of how difficult it was to stop checking multiple times a day. Especially appreciate how lax the moderation tends to be compared to a lot of places, the crew here does a great job. Out of curiousity I decided to try making a new account (solely for testing purposes) to see what exactly is wrong with the sign up process. The issue seems to be that it never sends you an account verification email, thus making it impossible to complete registration. This is likely something to do with the email server upstream, hope it gets fixed. Also, lol
