Report: Falcons open to trading 4th pick

From The Score:

The Atlanta Falcons are open to dealing the fourth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Albert Breer of MMQB reports.

Atlanta has had exploratory talks with teams looking up to move up in the draft, Breer adds.

With quarterbacks expected to be selected with the first three picks of the draft, a team could acquire the Falcons' selection to secure the best-remaining signal-caller.

Atlanta could also choose a passer to develop behind Matt Ryan if the team keeps the pick. However, the longtime Falcons quarterback holds cap hits of $26.9 million and $48.7 million for the next two seasons after he restructured his contract last month, according to Spotrac.

A top-ranked position player such as Kyle Pitts could also be in play for Atlanta. Pitts, who's widely regarded as the best tight end in the 2021 class, previously said the Falcons expressed interest in selecting him.

The draft has already seen significant movement. The San Francisco 49ers traded up to acquire the third overall pick from the Miami Dolphins.

Yeah ATL >> CAR trade is nigh impossible. One can only hope the asking price is too high. If number 3 got a swap of 1st's, two future firsts, and a 3rd -- you'd have to imagine that the price will be similar.

The question is will teams want to spend that much on the ''4th best QB''. I think that's what it will boil down to. DEN would make the most sense as they (ATL) could move down to #9 and still acquire a great player, and the cost cost for DEN would be a little less that what it may take for WAS, or NE to jump.

I also see a trade with an NFC opponent unlikely so WAS seems more of a longshot -- DEN / NE are the teams to watch IMO.

JAX - Lawrence

NYJ - Wilson

SF via MIA - Fields / Lance / Jones

ATL >> DEN - Fields / Lance / Jones

CIN -

MIA

DET

CAR

DEN >> ATL

--------------------------------------------------------

In this scenario with four picks before us at #8 several great players could still be available, so no matter what happens we will get a good prospect. UNFORTUNATELY it will likely lead to another year of mediocre QB play, while the roster / coaching seems good enough to keep us out of the top 5.

Pitts

Chase

SeWell

Parsons

Slater

PFF just put out a mock draft where the Broncos get the #4 pick from the Falcons specifically because the Falcons don't want Carolina to get a new QB. Carolina elects to take a neglected Penei Sewell, who fell after the Bengals drafted Chase.

I wouldn't mind this scenario if it meant we got Darnold or traded back into the first with the Packers for Mond, just so we can have that 5th year option in lieu of a 3rd round pick, which both would cost.

    • I'm looking at the schedule and I see a 10+win season easy.  I think Carolina goes undefeated in the division.  I also believe that the Bears, Bengals, Lions, Browns, Steelers are very winnable.  Revenge game with phillips and the eagles could be a win.  Honestly only 2 games I see as chalking up a L to off the bat is the Seahawks and Broncos.
    • I guess so. Don't think I was involved with previous discussions.  Tepper is one of the newest owners in the NFL. Dan is going into his 3rd season as a GM - ever. Dave is going into his 3rd season as a HC - ever. Before becoming a HC, he was an OC/playcaller for one season total. Idzik is about to go into his 1st year as a play caller - ever. WRs are rookies, sophomores and 3rd year guys - though the experienced 3rd year guys are XL and Coker (who has missed a ton of games). TEs are guys going into their 2nd and 3rd seasons, and Tommy Tremble - though Sanders has missed a ton of games. QB has played 3 years. Chuba is an experienced RB, but Brooks and Etienne have taken very little snaps at the position. O-line is more experienced vets with some talent - which is HUGE. Need them to stay healthy. I mean the offense is very young in every aspect except O-line. You see it differently?
