Who’s the best head coach in Carolina Panthers history?

We had a coordinator discussion, so here’s one for the head coaches.

Dom Capers
George Seifert
John Fox
Ron Rivera
Matt Rhule

Not including the three-game tenure of Perry Fewell, here’s how I rank them:

Rivera - Rough start/finish, but led us to our best season ever, 1 NFC title, 3 division titles and 4 playoff appearances. Players loved him and while his message grew stale after 9 years, it’s very clear Ron’s far better than what we replaced him with in every conceivable category
Capers - Didn’t have the highs of Fox’s tenure but he didn’t have the lows (almost did though), and he’s not nearly as much of a dick
Fox - Fox got us to our first Super Bowl and had, coaching-wise, a good reputation around the league while here, but he absolutely didn’t try in 2010 bc of his JR feud
Seifert - Came so close to a playoff berth in his first year and guided us to our worst season ever, but also had the best draft we’ve ever had
Rhule - Has contributed nothing but shitty motivational-speaker platitudes and a penchant for hiring and signing Temple and Baylor people over people with better skill. Will go down as “the dark era” in our history

We are still looking for him, all of our coaches have been trash. Good coaches have back to back winning seasons.

The best coach we have ever had was a DC and he is now the HC of the Bills.

While I don't agree with the trash comment, I do agree wholeheartedly about our best coach heading to the Bills.

This is so extreme lol

I completely get and share a lot of the Rhule frustration, but he inherited a team that needed an obvious rebuild and we aren't halfway through his second season. All of Rhule's best years in previous jobs he's had have come in year 3. Ron was also average/bad until year 3.

Let this play out a little more.

    • For example your data starts with Brady winning. Before that dynasty it was more wide open with different teams winning different ways. I don’t think that what they accomplished would be considered any sort of norm for the league (although the Chiefs might be proving me wrong currently).  I get what you are saying though. Teams just have to be looking for ways to win outside of finding the next Brady or Mahomes, because that’s just not realistic. That’s like counting on winning the lottery as part of your retirement plans. I would focus more on the other teams that have won and how they accomplished it. Most of those were solid, balanced rosters. One could argue the Patriots had a nice defense helping out Brady keeping games close for him to do his clutch drives. Similar to the Chiefs playoff run. Their defense isn’t getting enough credit either because it was tough in the playoffs.
    • If you have $100k in the bank and you live in a paid for home you can probably make it quite awhile relatively comfortably with SS supplementation as long as you're not being extravagant. Then you hit the first big medical expense and now you're in a financial tailspin.
