Jake on Sam

How can Joe Brady help Darnold any more than he possibly has?

He gives him easy throws.  Darnold misses them.  Sure, we could commit harder to the run game, but Hubbard is the only back on the roster that we can really trust to be effective and teams aren't going to let him go wild against us.  He's played well but only averaging 3.7 YPC for a reason, 2.7 last week.

The fact of the matter is we tried protecting him via McCaffrey.  It's why McCaffrey got so many touches.  Brady can't do much more than what he's been doing to help Darnold.  Darnold just lacks the IQ to get the basics down.

I think that Brady has to remember that Sam is a rehab project and set him up for more success. (Of course all the drops are not helping either).  Brady abandoning the run game and putting the game on the arm of Darnold with a line who cannot protect is just not very smart.  He continues to do this while his head coach is telling the world that the team needs to run the ball.  Makes no sense.

If Jake is right, Sam needs help from Brady.  If one fails they both fails.  I doubt Brady gets any HC interviews this year unless it is at LSU.

Good insight, and it sure feels like Jake is right.  Watching the game last night I couldn’t help but notice how often the Packers and Cardinals ran the ball, especially on first down to create more manageable situations.  And that’s with Rogers and Murray at QB.

Joe has not put Sam in good positions with his crappy play calling and poor adjustments.  Yes, Sam had made bad decisions, but as Jake said I truly believe at this point he is overthinking things based on the situations he had been in.

His processing and decision making is what it is and has always been. He is a fourth year starter. Now is the time for progress not going in the other direction full speed. He got pulled out of the game for PJ Walker and he was outclassed by Daniel Jones who is also not on a good football team. The odds of this working out were not good from the beginning but now it is sheer desperation to still be hoping he will turn into a franchise qb.

IMHO, the issue with the O# is that coaching is not getting through. Our QB is playing bad, our OL is playing bad, our WRs are playing bad.

Bad reads, bad blocking, bad routes timing and separations. They all have a common denominator and from what we know, that's Joe Brady.
And this is not to say that he is a bad play designer, play caller, awful Coach or whatever.
With any scheme, as a player, the better you understand what and why are you performing a specific task, better you'll perform and execute. With most of our O#, this is not the case.

Maybe our philosophy is great, but is teached poorly? Maybe the timing is off because the designer isn't really great at understanding some football concepts? Maybe the terminology is confusing? Other? All of the above?
Who knows. But the point is that a lot of the O#'s bad execution can be fixed by proper coaching.

Are they able to identify the problem first, and then correct it?

It was a good read, Jake is very insightful.

I think it comes down to pressure and expectation.  Like in NY, Sam was the #3 over all pick, has all the tools, and the expectation was for him to save a poo franchise.  While I think Sam seems like a really nice, if completely bland dude, I'm not sure he has the make up to be the "man."

Like, in our first 3 games, there were zero real expectations.  The goal was for him play better, which he did.  Then after that start, the P word gets tossed around.  Everyone expected Sam to continue to elevate.  But he folded.

So for the team, the question becomes how do you find a way for him to be successful?  You have to run the ball effectively.  The plays have to work.  As Dan Orlovski pointed out, the plays were the exact same.  That's not what Sam needs.  Sam needs to be guided into his reads and his throws.  Think like Kyle Shanahan style offense.  Where an idiot can make the read and throw the ball to playmakers.

Then let Sam grow in that.  I think the yanked the training wheels off too quickly on Sam.  Will Sam be our guy for the long term?  Probably not.  But we need to try to get some value out of Sam.  I think fans can deal with us losing, so long as the team doesn't quit.  It's one thing when the other team is just more talented.  It's another when you just fold.  Sam needs to play better, period.

Now it's not on all the coaches.  Sam has to actually do the things.  If he's not/can't, then no amount of coaching will fix that problem.  That's where we are now - figuring out which party is liable.

Some broken things can’t be fixed or even if they are, not worth the effort as the result is not what is  needed

he is a grown ass man making millions to play a position he can’t play

hopefully cmc returns and makes it all better with that first read and defenders not taking away Moore

what is happening is without CMC, defenses are taking away the next threat, DJ, and saying to Darnold and Robbie  and the coaches,  now beat us and the panthers offense can’t

Sam is cooked, it's time to move on.

yup. all the "if we just do this" or "when cmac is healthy" and fluff pieces in the world aren't going to change the fact that Darnold is and always has been a turnover machine who gets rattled and has tunnel vision....despite showing flashes, he is just not a reliable NFL franchise QB.

Chicken or egg? It doesn't matter at this point. Darnold has been Carr'ed or Darnold was always a busted brain on a talented body. It just doesn't matter at this point. Nothing happening here wasn't happening with Darnold in NJ.

It's over. At this point in his career it's time to start talking about if he is good enough to be a backup.  We wouldn't have been pursuing Watson if the team thought there was a desirable future with Sam.

Sadly all you need to do is put on the horror show that is three years of the good and bad of Sam Darnold as a NY Jet to figure out which party is liable. We have moved on from blaming their staff to now our own and everyone in between. Enough is enough.
