All aboard the Wilks Wagon

Let's let the season play out, or at least another three games before we crown anyone. And as to the quality of our opponents, well, you have to beat who is on the schedule, that's just the way it is.

Still, I like what Wilks is getting out of this team and how he is doing it. The team has gotten noticeably tougher since he took over. They used to play like cream puffs out there.

We have the benefit of getting the rest of the season to evaluate Wilks before we have to make that decision. I'm not sold right now but I am willing to keep an open mind based on how he does the rest of the year. I did really like his decision to go for it on 4th down and it showed growth; never expected to see him fake a punt in our own territory in the 1st quarter against a team with a struggling offense. If he keeps showing a willingness to evolve like that, I could be persuaded.

I suspect his ceiling is peak Ron Rivera, a coach who can get his players to play hard for him and steer a team loaded with talent to some playoff success but struggles to give us tactical advantages that could help us upend teams that are clearly more talented on paper. I mean you could obviously do a lot worse but at the very minimum we better do an exhaustive head coaching search that includes interviewing several offensive coordinators.

It’s just too early to say. I think Wilks is a good man and a competent football coach. He needs to be in the running for the top position only if this team finishes strong and he leads the team to a winning record or close to it (not counting the 1-4 start under Rhule). The rest of the season will tell us a lot.

Let’s say he wins out and the team finishes 9-8 and wins the division. Uh, no duh, I want Wilks back next season no questions asked.

But on the flip side let’s say the team utterly collapses and loses the rest of their games to finish 4-13. Bye Felicia.

The likely scenario is they finish around 6-11 or 7-10. That puts Wilks with a record of 5-7 or 6-6. Is that good enough to warrant another season? With those records, they probably won’t be in the mix for a top rookie QB in the draft. Who is going to play QB? Who will coach the offense? I just worry if they keep Wilks as HC, we will end up with the same mess we’ve been in without a franchise QB and relying on journeymen offensive coordinators to develop a young QB.

If the season finishes as I expect, we will need a complete overhaul on offense. So I’m more into hiring an offensive minded head coach like Shane Steichen, or even Frank Reich. Someone with a history of working with QBs and a track record of success.

Should definitely be out next head coach. I don't want to gamble again on an unknown.

I think it's more of do I see a better option out there. you can clearly see an improvement with play on the field under Wilks as well as more common sense coaching decisions. Rhule was a moron....

We need to let him finish this run out, but the initial results make me feel like he is a capable of being a great head coach. I went and watched some of his Arizona press conferences, he seemed flustered and anxious.  FWIW, while they screwed him over, I do think Wilks was in over his head a bit at the time, but that experience plus where he's at now is why he's looking good as a coach.

I think the biggest mistake we could make is screwing this up like the raiders did.  They had a good coach in Rich Bisaccia that locker room rallied around, instead they went and got the hot name for the next head coach and now their a raging tire fire.  IF he continues this way, Keep Steve and see what he can do with the full time gig.

If we are still in playoff contention on the final week I would be open to bringing him back next year. When he got the job this team looked like they were headed towards 3-14 and a top pick. Everyone including myself wanted to tank. It looked as if the front office was trying to tank. So to field a competitive team week after week, I think says has to mean something. Look at the Raiders after getting rid of their coach after he led them to the playoffs. That said, lets let the season play out.

With the players that seem be buying in on what’s being sold in that locker room at the moment…

Getting players back since he took over on both sides of the ball. Or at least consistency of players.

Evaluation of the players he has seen, but also making the changes to get live fire reps for some of the players we all as fans wanted to to see before Rhule was let go.

Outside the obvious QB situation, and McAdoo’s Offensive play calling…

Let’s see what happens for sure. But I don’t see much that stand in Wilkes way at the moment.

    • Here are more fun facts about Peyton Manning's rookie season: Peyton ranked 3rd in total passing yards, 5th in passing touchdowns, 4th in 1st-down completions, 11th in TD%, and 8th in completions that were 20 yards or more.  Now let's look at how Bryce compared to his peers: 20th in total passing yards, 28th in passing TDs, 21st in 1st-down completions, 31st in TD%, and 27th in completions that were 20 yards or more.  To put it mildly, Peyton showed plenty of flashes as a franchise quarterback. Bryce? Not so much, almost none at all, as a matter of fact. Oh, and Peyton is legit 6'4", literally head and shoulders above Bryce. I sometimes wonder if Bryce defenders are sentient at all.
