Opinions: Young QB #1

I guess this means he is taking the field as QB #1 against the Falcons.

How do u all feel about starting him the first game of the season or should they have eased him in.

If he has trouble would they yank him for Dalton and would that be the right thing to do for his confidence?

What u got?

Bryce has never been referred to as a project, man has been ready to play week one since his Heisman campaign. Growing pains will happen, look at Payton’s year one. But he will grow and gain valuable experience, combined with the fact our team is actually talented. He’s not being thrown into the fire, he is being thrown into a fairly comfy futon with Riech and our experienced staff being his arm rest. Maybe our receiving core can make for a nice comfy security blanket for our young stud.

I think easing someone in is a good “policy” even though everyone know what the unspoken expectations is.

1. Signal to the team that you have to work to earn spot regardless of draft position.

2. Lets the young guys have a bit less stress even though in the back of their mind they know they are supposed to start.

everyone should expect him to start. We know

Historically I've generally been very for starting young QBs on the bench, citing examples like Rodgers, Mahomes recently, etc. But then there are guys like Cam, Luck, Burrow, Herbert who start right away and dominate from the get go (yes I know Herbert was initially behind Tyrod but he didn't sit long at all and basically started from day 1 in all practicality). So I don't have any strong preference.

I think generally the idea behind sitting a QB is to help him with the mental aspect and getting used to the processing, fully grasp the offense and defenses and not get shell shock right from the start. I still think David Carr could've been an incredible QB in a better situation but he was really set up to fail from the start. Sam Darnold is another possible example of that as he has the talent but the damage was done early in his career with the Jets.

An elite OL, run game, WRs, scheme, etc. can all help with that and I think we've got the OL part and hopefully the coaching. But most importantly Bryce came out of college about as well prepared as any QB ever could be in the mental aspects of the game as his processing is unparalleled at his age. So despite my previous tendency to lean towards easing a young QB in, I'm 100% for starting Bryce from day 1 and excited as hell. Also as a 1st overall pick with the context surrounding the team these past several years you just cannot start Dalton day 1 if Bryce is even close to ready, what a terrible look that'd be. And I have no concerns about Bryce being ready.

You draft a QB #1 overall, you start him day #1. If he's not ready, you probably picked the wrong guy.

Best way to get his feet under him is to get his feet on the field. You trust you picked a guy who can do it and you trust your ability to get him and the team ready.

The only thing they lack heading into their first season is experience and there's only one way to get it.

Get him ready and get him in the game.
